3D Musketeers

Majestic HotelPaul W.S. Anderson has made one truly good movie in his life, and that is Event Horizon. The rest — Resident Evil, Death Race, yadda-yadda — is dreck. But if he has to choose a franchise to taint, I suppose there’s no harm in letting him foul up characters with a strong literary background, is there?

Anderson’s directing a new adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel The Three Musketeers, in 3D, from a script he wrote along with Andrew Davies. If this sounds like a good idea to you, raise your hand to allow me to hunt you down more efficiently.

According to the Hollywood Reporter blog HeatVision, Anderson’s take will be a little different stylistically than what we’re used to in retellings of Dumas’ tale:

“We are definitely modernizing ‘The Three Musketeers’ without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece,” said Anderson, who hopes to shoot in France and Germany. “But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don’t take center stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure.”

The film’s tentatively slated for release in 2011.

Does this sound like a horrible idea to anyone else? He’s attempting to create what Sherlock Holmes is shaping up to be, only without the level of talent and the muddying factor of 3D. Let us know in the comments what you think.

On an unrelated note, Paul W.S. Anderson has a child with Milla Jovovich. The world is an unjust place, sometimes.
