Full moon

The upcoming trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon will be attached to the tween flick Bandslam, opening everywhere on 8/14. I’m assuming that the same people who are into Twilighty goodness are also into Bandslam. On second thought, I don’t think anybody is “into” Bandslam. Hell, it’s my JOB to know about Bandslam and I still don’t know what the hell it is. I just know it has the Disney chick that keeps taking naughty pictures of herself.

Well, if you can’t wait until Friday for the New Moon trailer, Summit will be releasing the trailer to online audiences sometime today.

Bigelow...gettin' more respect.

Acclaimed director Kathryn Bigelow will be reuniting with Mark Boal for the upcoming action-adventure flick Triple Frontier. The team that brought this summer’s critical darling, The Hurt Locker, will focus on a story that is described as a “high-stakes ensemble project.”

Though details are scarce, the film takes place in the border region of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, an area known for having a high amount of organized crime and terrorist activities. The area, ironically, also has a high concentration of South American Pandas, a rare breed of cuddly herbivores that delight in the area where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge.

The Hurt Locker, along with Duncan Jones’ Moon, has been one of the few films this summer worth seeing. Mark Boal wrote the script for Hurt Locker after being embedded with an U.S. Army bomb squad for several weeks. Bigelow, who has been receiving Oscar buzz for her direction, shot the film in Jordan and Vancouver, Canada.

No word on the film’s anticipated release date.

Why I oughta'...

Paul Giamatti is currently in talks to replace the recently absent Sean Penn in the Farrelly Brothers upcoming comedy The Three Stooges.

According to the The Boston Globe, Giamatti, who was fantastic in Duplicity, will pick up the role of the fluffy-headed Larry. Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey are on the hook to play Moe and Curly, respectively.

Penn exited the project to spend more time with the family.

The Three Stooges was originally set up with original Stooge shorts producer Columbia, until rights holder C3 Entertainment Inc. sold the film rights to Warner Bros. for the Farrelly brothers to direct in 2001. MGM later obtained the rights along with the Farrelly’s services.

The Farrelly’s script, which Bobby Farrelly referred to as Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest, was originally plotted out as a series of four shorts. The story was eventually changed to a full-length feature.

More adventure than Adventureland

In the most ridiculously awesome news of the day, the kind souls at Columbia have released the undead trailer for their upcoming horror-comedy Zombieland.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, Zombieland takes place in a world overrun by zombies. It’s fiction, just so you know…

Harrelson and Eisenberg (Adventureland) play two dudes who seem to have the keen ability to stay alive in a world run by the living dead. They join forces with two other survivors (Stone and Breslin) and the two teams are forced to work with each other…or face being zombie food.

Zombieland opens in theaters October 9th.

Kung-POW

Taiwanese actor-singer and all-around-good-looking chap, Jay Chou, has been cast as Kato, Green Hornet’s sidekick in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the cult ’60s show The Green Hornet.

Chou replaces Stephen Chow who left production for reasons unknown but presumably sound. Chou, who is evidently a chart-topping artist at home, was seen in The Curse of the Golden Flower and Initial D.

“[Chou] is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog,” said Hornet director Michel Gondry.

Chou steps into a role made famous by legendary martial artist Bruce Lee.

The Green Hornet has been plagued with trouble since pre-production when Chow backed away from directing duties. The Kung Fu Hustle director intended to stay on as Kato but ultimately decided to leave for what is believed to be “irreconcilable differences.”

Cock joke practitioner Seth Rogen is set to play the Green Hornet and co-wrote the script with his right testicle Evan Goldberg. (Now you can see why Chow may have left…)

Cameron Diaz and Nicolas Cage have recently been added to the growing cast.

You can check out Chou and his kicks in the flaccid Hong Kong actioner Dunk, which Variety said “lacks the nonsense humor and cartoon action of hits like Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, Chou is attempting to fill in as Hong Kong’s latest action star.”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra director Stephen Sommers is already thinking about a part two for the big-screen Real American Hero story that’s due out August 8th.

“…I hope I get to do a sequel, first of all because I had so much fun with these actors. I go into these movies knowing it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and I won’t work with assholes,” Sommers said in an interview with Cinematical.

Sommers, who also directed all of the Mummy films, is apparently in love with the canon and surrouding “mythology” wrapped around everybody’s favorite toy soilders. “Because the mythology is all there, there’s a lot of interesting stuff. Like, something you don’t know yet is who killed Hard Master,” he went on to say. “I mean, the hardcore G.I. Joe fans know that it wasn’t Storm Shadow.”

The filmmaker finished by saying, “We had a blast – it was really hard, but we had a lot of fun on the set, so to get to hang out with these people again would be just heaven.”

Despite the film not being screened to the majority of critics, G.I. Joe is looking to light up the box office this weekend. The last big action film of the summer, Joe is looking to be another Transformers 2 (mad cash) only without the harsh reviews (mad cows).

G.I. Joe will be huge this weekend, but what will be the magic number to greenlight a sequel? Studios usually place a benchmark of around $100 million but this actioner will need much more during its run to recoup its budget of between $150 million and $200 million.

That probably won’t be a problem.

Gratuitous

Something about Carla Gugino is very foxy. I’m not sure if it’s the Old Hollywood aesthetics or her dressed as a superhero in Watchmen, but something is downright hot.

While we’re on the subject of Carla Gugnio, she has just been added to Zack Snyder’s (300, Watchmen) upcoming Warner Bros. drama Sucker Punch.

Centering on a girl (played by Emily Browning) who is placed into an insane asylum by her evil stepfather, the girl retreats into an alternate reality as she learns to cope with her new-found predicament.

Cugino will play a nurse who (what) becomes (for) a (it) a madam at a brothel in the girl’s alternate world.

The film also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone and Abbie Cornish.

Sucker Punch is targeting a March 2011 release and begins production this fall.

Mr. Sparky...is that you?

I will personally handle anybody who says Guillermo del Toro isn’t working hard for the money, West Side Story-style. (snap your arse off, mate) Though currently handling pre-production of The Hobbit, del Toro will reunite with Spanish firm Rodar y Rodar for producer duty on the “dark Spanish-language thriller” Los ojos de Julia (Julia’s Eyes).

“The thriller’s an excuse to talk about a woman who overcomes her limitations; it’s a journey of self-discovery,” says Rodar’s Joaquin Padro.

Directed by Guillem Morales, Julia’s Eyes will be shot from Julia’s POV, a style reminiscent of Cloverfield, REC and its American counterpart Quarantine. Del Toro helped land the film in the capable hands of Focus Features, International, and also helped oversee writing and casting.

According to Variety, del Toro says it “won’t be a simple schlock-a-thon.”

The team also produced and directed the foreign sensation El orfanato (The Orphanage), which is currently being targeted for recreation for American fast-food audiences.

Personally, I’m loving the rise of Spanish thrillers on our shores. For me, the only credible horror flicks these days are coming from the Spanish region.
