Kelley’s Kindreds and Paul Reiser’s Next – I’ve decided to pour through the fall 2010 pilot orders and let you know what else is out there waiting in the wings.

From ABC the show with the mostest seems to be Mr. Sunshine. It’s a single camera dramadey starring Mathew Perry and Allison Janney. Really, bringing those two together on a single show means awesomeness, so, well there you go. Perry will be playing a self-involved manager of a second-rate sports team with Janney as his boss.

While I am always excited to see the fuss fans make over Alex O’Loughlin and Hawaii Five-O should be a fun remake, the drama I am most interested in from CBS is The Quinn-Tuplets.

I’ve always been a sucker for entertainment dramas, A Star is Born through to Entourage. The Quinn-Tuplets is a show about the personal and professional lives of the Quinn quintuplets, five adults whose lives were documented and broadcast since birth. It just seems fun. You’ve got all the rag magazines and celebrity gossip — only now we’ll get to see how the people featured in the media react to it.

Also from CBS, the undeniable king of the sitcom, there were many interesting comedy projects to choose from. Sh** my Dad Says, a multi-camera show based on the popular twitter account and starring William Shatner, seems to me like a no brainer. However, I’m trying to look at the pilots picking daisies out in left field. So here it goes. I’m intrigued by the Untitled Ant Hines project.

The project is pitched as a single camera sitcom centering on a British lowlife who moves to Los Angeles to reconnect with his celebrity daughter. Again, it might just be my love of the personal side to the entertainment industry. I mean I sat through Grosse Pointe. Hopefully Mitch Hurwitz, of Arrested Development fame, will be less self-indulgent than Darren Star and his show more hilarious.

It was hard to pick one show to talk about from the CW, a network I feel is waiting on the wings in general. They have Betwixt, another book adaptation following in supernatural tradition of The Vampire Diaries. I am also intrigued by an untitled show that sounds like Greys Anatomy, which is completely against the tradition of the tweenie melodramas the CW has been cultivating. So I’ll have to check that out.

However, The CW is also coming out with a new show from the Gilmore Girl’s Amy Sherman-Palladino. Even though her last project The Return of Jezebel James didn’t pan out I still have faith in Palladino and am excited to see how this new project turns out.

Since NBC managed to nab a lot of highly buzzed projects the show Rex is not your Lawyer may seem like it’s ended up in this article by default, but do not be fooled! The show’s premise is intriguing: a brilliant attorney begins coaching people who represent themselves. It also seems educational, like in the process I’ll learn about being a lawyer by magical expositional osmosis. On top of all of this, it stars David Tennant. So yea, I’ll be tuning in.

For NBC comedies I am most intrigued by an outlined presentation about a group of friends who end up making their favorite sci-fi show after it ends. It may feel like an idea for a stand alone episode of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory but it could lead to them getting their own fame on Youtube or something and then… well, there I go again about loving shows about entertainment.

Fox is bringing a wide variety of things to the table next year, but only one of them is from a writer of Arrested Development starring a cast member from the show. Mitchell Hurwitz and Will Arnett are to be reunited in a single camera comedy about a rich Beverly Hills jackass who falls in love with a charitable tree-hugging woman. Fox should at least feel bad enough about Development to give the show a chance. I know I will be.

So there you have it. They don’t have all the glitz, glam or press of the pilots you’ve been hearing about but I think they’re kinda swell. What do you think? What are you looking forward to most for this fall?

More Friends Returning To Your TV This Fall!

TV News

abc

Allison Janney

Episodes

Friends

Mathew Perry

Matt LeBlanc

Mr Sunshine

The West Wing
<guid

Perry is returning to network TV to play a stadium manager, while LeBlanc is returning to play — well, himself.

There has been a considerable amount of buzz surrounding Perry’s return to prime time, as he follows his Friend Courtney Cox to her new home on ABC with the successful Cougar Town. Less has been said about LeBlanc’s move to cable.

When you think about any of the “friends” your mind automatically jumps to Central Perk, but no one has had more trouble escaping his Friends persona than LeBlanc. Even stronger still is that lingering taste Joey (2002-2004) left in our mouths. So, why am I so excited for the new project? LeBlanc doesn’t have to overcome his former Friends character, he’s playing himself! The new show from Showtime is a single-camera entertainment industry satire about a British comedy team who travel to Hollywood to remake their successful U.K. TV series — only to be told it must star a woefully miscast LeBlanc. The humor’s Legit.

As for Perry’s Mr Sunshine, it just keeps getting better. A comedy co-written by Perry with writers of Family Guy and ‘Til Death was exciting, but throw in West Wing’s Emmy-Award winning Allison Janney and it’s hard to see where it will go wrong.

However, while I have hopes the two Sorkin Alums (Perry played his short lived Studio Sixty) will crank out a hit – Janney hasn’t put all her eggs in one basket. She is attached to another pilot for 2010, this one also for Showtime.

While it’s doubtful we’ll get to see all our favorites succeed this fall, its looking more and more likely we’ll get to see them again.

ABC’s Castle gets a Third Season!

TV News

"Castle"

abc
<guid

ABC even considered the program a bubble show before adding it to the 2009 fall schedule. However, since renewal the show has been gaining momentum. This Monday Castle even beat a rerun of timeslot rival CSI: Miami finishing second for the night behind its power house lead in Dancing with the Stars.

The show’s time slot has been in the news a lot over recent months with Leno and O’Brien, but even before the late-show madness 10 PM was a concern for networks. Scripted dramas like Castle have just not been pulling in the numbers they used to before cable and DVR. However, this past Monday saw Castle leading the alphabet network to its highest rating for a scripted program at 10 since 1996.

While some chalk Castle’s success up to its Stars lead-in, ABC President of Entertainment Steve McPherson is more confident. The network “believed in Castle and its team from the beginning,” according to McPherson. “Not only does the audience get bigger each week, the show gets better every year.”

Castle fans that may have been biting their nails at the series narrow renewal last spring can rest easy. The show’s new season includes a full pickup of 22 episodes.

Losing the Battle, Winning the War: Networks struggle with Cable over mature content

TV News

cougar town

Everybody Loves Raymond

Life Unexpected

Modern Family

Network TV

Parenthood

“Television Critic’s Notebook: Networks turn clock back to family hour” Mary Mcnamara discussed network television’s swing back towards family programming.

While Mcnamara, Federal Legislation and I agree there should be no mandate requiring the networks to program family entertainment, it makes sense to move away from graphic content. There will always been rules baring certain things to be on network TV no similar restriction exists for cable. So let them have it.

There were no Cosby or Father Knows Bests this season, but there were a string of programs aimed at the entirely family. Parenthood and Modern Family have their target demos in the titles, but new shows like Cougar Town and Life Unexpected are also takes on modern family life.

In recent years, many shows featuring families used the children as props and plot vehicles. We never got to know Raymond’s kids. However, this new string of sit-coms and dramas are capitalizing on cross generational casts. They have content appropriate for the family with story lines that appeal to all members.

While there are many factors aiding in the Network’s increase in viewers this year, there can be no mistaking the impact that family content has had. In reverting back to cross generational shows with mass appeal, the networks have given up on their content war with cable. NBC can never show what HBO can, but they can show a program that appeals to three times as many people and takes in that much more in advertising.

At’ll do networks. At’ll do.

What are your feelings? Should the networks leave the graphic content to cable?

What Matt Damon turned down Avatar for….

Movie News

Avatar

Gary Ross

Matt Damon

Robert Kennedy
<guid

May 12 and May 19 at 8 PM, the same time this season’s breakout Glee premiered in 2009.

Code 58 — Dallas police speak for a routine investigation — follows a young, ambitious and by-the-book detective Jack Bailey (Hanks) who’s snarky remarks and habit of undermining himself gets him relegated to the mundane petty crimes department. He is partnered with a boozy, former big-shot detective Dan Stark (Whitford) who spends most of his time rehashing his glory days.

Jack may not see it, but he has little chance of getting out of his situation: his knack for making enemies at the station has assured he is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Jack’s only ally is Liz Towsend (Jenny Wade, Reaper), a quick-witted Assistant District Attorney and former girlfriend whom Jack hasn’t quite gotten over. They worry further involvement in downloading ventures could cannibalize existing revenues from syndication and DVD sales.

NBC Universal took its programming off back in 2008 in an effort to earn more through iTunes. They succeeded in obtaining a raise of the price ceiling from $1.99 to $ 2.99 an episode. However, the new strategy proposed by CBS has pricing headed in the opposite direction.

“There are certain shows that will be sold on Apple for 99 cents,” Moonves said during the company’s earnings call on Friday. The details on which shows the network would be providing at these lower prices were not discussed.

It is possible CBS is not planning a completely game-changing stance on iTunes downloading. Like other major networks, CBS already offers older programming and new shows it is promoting at discount prices.

However, going on the context of Moonves’s comments, it is clear CBS is planning its pricing structure on more than a one-off basis.

When Pirates Returns Next Summer Two Stars will be Missing

Movie News
<guid
