BBC Star Tom Hiddleston Cast as ‘Thor’ Villain

Loki is tougher than he looks

Loki is tougher than he looks.

I know what you’re thinking. Who is Tom Hiddleston? Is he the voice of the Geico gecko? Is he the weirdo under the Burger King mask? Nay. He’s just the latest addition to Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming Thor project.

Hiddleston, who starred in the BBC miniseries Wallander and on stage with Branagh in Ivanov, will play Thor’s arch-nemesis, Loki. He was also on the short list to portray Thor before Chris Hemsworth was ultimately cast as the mighty wielder of Mjöllnir

Loki made his first Marvel Comics appearance in Timely Comics’ publication Venus #6 (August 1949), where Loki was inaccurately featured as a member of the Olympian gods exiled to the Underworld. He made his first official Marvel appearance in Journey into Mystery #85 (October 1962), where Loki was reintroduced by brothers and co-writers Stan Lee and Larry Lieber and he was redesigned by Jack Kirby. Loki has appeared in various issues of Journey Into Mystery, Thor, the Avengers and several other Marvel Universe titles.  Marvel eventually found the character popular enough to let Robert Rodi proceed with writing a mini-series, Loki #1-4 (July 2004 – October 2004), that features a different look at the character. The mini-series features painted covers and painted interior pages by artist Esad Ribic.

Thor is slated for May 20, 2011.
