We’ve already told you about some of the speculation and general Hollywood excitement surrounding the proposed sequel to writer/director James Cameron’s billion-dollar-plus milestone Avatar, including the possible return of actress Sigourney Weaver. Now, with an official green light still not having been given, Cameron has dropped a few minor hints regarding how he would like to handle the ongoing saga of Jake Sully and the Na’vi.

After accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Visual Effects Society’s annual ceremonies, Cameron discussed the possible sequel with Sci-Fi Wire. First topic? The title:
“Certainly I don’t want to call it Avatar 2. He’s not an avatar anymore, is he? Maybe we’ll call it Na’vi.”
He then went on to consider the direction of the second installment’s story and themes, which he hopes will focus more heavily on the spiritual nature and culture of the Na’vi.
“I think we can see that there’s a greater receptivity to it on the part of the audience than certainly the studio originally imagined,” Cameron said. “We pared back on it a fair bit in the first film, and I think we can go farther in that direction and not alienate people.”
Whatever the title or theme, one thing seems to be certain: Cameron himself will be directing.
“It’d be premature to turn it over to somebody else right now. I think I’d have to use a film to train somebody to be able to take the reins, honestly. That’s how I see it.”
So, you knew it was coming. Let’s hear your ideas for the a title and/or plot for an Avatar sequel (this should be interesting.)
