Can Jon Stewart Do It Again? Another Daily Show Spin-off.

Comedy Central has announced today that they will producing another spin-off show featuring a character from The Daily Show- this time, that person is Demetri Martin.

Fans of The Daily Show will recognize Martin as the show’s “Youth   Correspondent,” and his segment was entitled “Professional Important News with Demetri Martin.” His new show will be titled “Important Things With Demetri Martin.” Jon Stewart will be working closely with Martin for the first 6-10 episodes, and is said to have played an important role in the development of the pilot. The show will be of a slightly different format that Comedy Central’s other sketch show attempts, and this is mainly due to Martin’s “unique” comedic style. I personally feel that he is very similar to Mitch Hedberg in his comedic style, with jokes about very trivial and inane things, though in a format that works very well.

This isn’t the first time that The Daily Show, under Jon Stewart, has spawned a spin-off. The very well received Colbert Report was originally a short segment on The Daily Show featuring Stephen Colbert, who played a “slightly-off” media correspondent. His current show features him as the egotistical right-wing talk show host, and has enjoyed immense popularity. This is due in part to Jon Stewart’s involvement and approval of the project, so we’ll have to see if Stewart’s thunder will strike twice.

How will “Important Things” do? Martin’s sense of comedy is, at best, an acquired taste. However, I think we can all agree that this sketch show will be better than Comedy Central’s Mind of Mencia. Will you be watching the pilot/subsequent programs? How do you think it will do? Tell us in the comments.

I had food poisoning a few years ago. That was funnier than Mind of Mencia. So if this show consists of nothing but him curled up in a corner of a bathroom crying it’s still gonna top Carlos. This dude has his moments but lacks in consistency. Jon Stewart’s involvement should help, but it will be more interesting how good the show is after Martin is on his own. I’m not setting the Tivo just yet.
