Casino Royale (Bluray Review)

Casino Royale Blu-Ray/ Movie Thoughts

We all know that there’s no shortage of Bond movies. Whether you’re watching 007 take on the iron-jawed Odd Job from Goldfinger or the brass-knuckle-adorning Red Grant in From Russia with Love, it’s safe to assume that the day’s winner will celebrate with a shaken – not stirred – martini. In the Bond flick before last, Casino Royale, avid fans get to see Daniel Craig take the helm and portray an upstart, big-on-love Bond in this prequel.

Casino Royale isn’t at all like the title suggests. One may expect to find Woody Harrelson in a B-flick pressing his luck at casino games in order to save his kidnapped wife. Master P would play the villain, no doubt. But instead of the mundane, this edition of the double-0 franchise brings the marvelous side of Bond to the big screen. And before you check out the prequel to all Bond films (and part 1 of the 2-part Casino/Quantum stretch), make sure you shop it on Blu-ray.

Bond on Blu-ray:  Although there’s something very appealing about watching Sean Connery and his slurring Scottish on VHS, seeing the new-age effects and listening to the throbbing digital sound on Blu-ray is an experience all its own. As Bond chases his first villain up the crane and through the construction site, it’s like you’re right there in the action. The detail literally pops, and if you’re afraid of heights, those palms will be sweating. Trying to explain that to your girlfriend is entirely up to you.

Craig is considered by many to be the best Bond since Connery. Moore, Brosnan, and that out-of-place Dalton made the franchise the butt of a few jokes over the years. However, most Bond diehards are big on both the movies and Ian Fleming’s novels. Much to the delight of the Bond-admiring world, Daniel Craig is the closest thing to the literary Bond since George Lazenby’s fleeting appearance.

When the Sony PlayStation first dropped in stores, it was the uber-expensive upgrade to everyone’s Nintendo 64. But even still, with a hefty price tag, no one thought it would be the new videogame standard. After the price started falling, PS became the world’s biggest craze. The same is true with Blu-ray. This high-def format has recently pummeled all forms of DVD, even HD DVDs. Titles like Casino Royale help to drive sales up.

Watching this Bond flick on Blu-ray is a great experience for those HD nuts who love seeing the pores in people’s faces. The colors are rich and vibrant, and Eva Green, who plays Bond’s first love Vespa Lynd, stands out as perhaps the hottest Bond girl since Pussy Galore (whose name alone is enough to make any short list!).

It’s not all fighting fun and casino games in this battle royale. The plot is extremely captivating. Bond and M’s relationship starts off rather rocky, as Bond is the proverbial “new recruit.” He’s charged with the task of stopping the blood-eyed mega-villain Le Chiffre. To do this, Bond must win a high-stakes poker tournament. With all the heart-pounding action and drama you’d expect from a new millennium action flick, Casino Royale is a welcomed addition to the Bond family, not to mention one of the best Blu-ray titles on the market.

Make sure you do your best to grab this film along with its n”next in line”, Quantum of Solace from your local video store. Blu-ray for the win on this one!!
