Later in the afternoon on the mildly warm Friday of Comic-Con, I took part in a roundtable interview with the cast and director of the upcoming web miniseries, Fear Clinic.

The first couple of awesome guys myself and others got to sit down with is director Robert Hall and actor Kane Hodder who plays Dr. Andover’s henchman of sorts, Villatoro.

What got you into the web series genre?

We had the script from Aaron Drane and mark Johnson in killer pat, brought it to me and it was originally a feature script and wound up being on FEARnet. their forte is the web so they said that this would make a great web series. So we talked to Robert anelgib and robert was super gun ho and he was instrumental in getting the orject going with us and robert came in and got in with all the heads of fearnet and loved the idea and that orbert was so behind it hnd how it wen form there

What is your character in Fear Clinic?

Kane: My character is the assistant to Robert’s character who is the doctor who runs the clinic. I assist him and he’s got a backstory type hold ove me in order to make dude what he wants me to do even though he doesn’t treat me any well. But theres a reason why he ended up not rebelling against him or else I’ll be back in prison. He takes advantage of him most of the time even though he tries to help him. Robert Hall called me and asked if I could be involved with it and I said absolutely. Its going to be a ground breaking web series.

Robert Hall: I don’t like doing things half-assed, I always have to do the whole big thing kind of mentality. I said that if I’m going to do this I’m going to do it with my friends and I’m going to make it bigger than it should be and with Robert (Englund) in there and with a call to Kane and like lets make it as horror centric as possible and we got Danielle (Harris) involved and my company and treats like its a movie and its not sub part, its shorter but not sub par.

Kane: We just saw the trailer; the sound the quality of the shocks that we did and everything about it is very high quality and I’m starting to get pissed off that people that say ‘Oh its on the web’. Oh just wait and see.

Robert Hall: The expectations are going to stop art changing and Angel of Death is a good show, wekk prodced, more money than us and looks pretty good. Internet and television are merging, theres no doubt about it. I can see youtube on my television and we all know it is merging. We all know how fast it is and I think that were right in line. There is nothing like this on television and nothing like this on the internet.

What do you do with the short attention span (of people)?

Robert Hall: I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention. Just kidding. You basically have less time for exposition and character development and you have to hit them in the nuts really quickly with the story and thankfully we have to do work so fast and gone so far. And our actors thought we were so prepared it makes it very easy. It looks like a movie and that you were put in the middle of it and normally it would take five episodes to explain who everyone is. Everyone is watching this and I think that this works quite along with that.

Kane: Because of the limited time that we have to show an episode it works because Robert (Hall) and myself we can get across a point or really a story point just by a look or one word or expression or a gesture that tells what you need to tell sufficiently and its kind of a fun challenge.

Robert Hall: I haven’t worked with Danielle and other than everyone behind and in front of the camera I’ve worked with before which helped obviously.

Melissa: In regards to it being a number of webisodes, depending on the increased amount of popularity, do you plan to do more or keep it as a mini series of sorts?

Robert Hall: I don’t know, I think theres a lot of possibilities and it depends on how people respond to it and how they respond. And its ultimately up to FEARnet and they’re behind the project. It feels like we can only goes up from here either it be 12 or 25 wepisodes to a movie. Not real sure what will be next I mean, Fear Clinic will happen

Kane: There’s more story to be told with this, we told as much of the story as we can do within five episodes and there’s so much more material (to be) explored that I can’t even imagine that we can’t do more of it.

Have you enjoyed being a character across a series because I know you havent done TV..

Kane: I’ve done quite a bit of TV, not too many recurring characters but I have done some of that in the past. Lately I’ve been doing features, nice roles within features, but this is nice to kind of continue a story, even though the webisodes are short, were going to continye the story

Robert Hall: Having this kind of medium enables you to explore it. You can do this infinitely, we can go and bring great horror guest stars with new phobias. There’s a lot of fun sh*t to do with this thing. Its like whatever medium that it is, whatever feature an actual feature or more episodes, there are more things we can do with this and were excited for the possibilities.

What makes you do this without you go like ‘We’ve seen this before’?

Robert Hall: I have to straddle a pretty fine line because of my effects kind of things. In my company I make remakes and a lot of people’s films and its not my fault. And what makes me roll my eyes is remakes that are really needless (cough) A Nightmare on Elm Street (cough). Its kind of like, if your talking a movie that was made thirty years ago and it was crappy then fine. I remade a film called The Crazies and the first crazies wasn’t anyting special and I think we had made a good remake out of that. But whenever I hear on a daily basis about the remakes that have been made makes me roll my eyes. What gets me excited is foreign films, (Let The Right One In, Martyrs) none of them from America, thats what gets me excited is originality.

Melissa: When it came to phobia aspect of it, because its obviously a huge part of the storyline, were any of the phobias one of your own? That kind of freaked you out?

Robert Hall: Mildly claustrophobic, but even today when we did the signing I can’t have anyone behind me brushing up against me. There’s certain airplanes I can’t sit on and like I can’t have my back to the table or wall. There were people coming and going behind me (at the signing) and at one point I had to walk away and shake it off. I believe I’m mildly (clausto).

Kane: I haven’t discovered any phobais that I’ve had yet.

Melissa: Your too tough? (laughs)

Kane: I know that’s what people think when I say that.

Robert Hall: (Strokes his shoulder) Your sure you aren’t suffering from homophobia? (Robert & Kane laugh)

Robert Hall and Kane Hodder are taken away to another table, so now we get to sit face to face with one of the icons of more recent horror generation himself, Robert Englund. I find myself slightly intimidated by his presence at first, and unfortunately his answers were so detailed (as wonderful as they are) and time was already running very short that I was not able to ask a question. However, here are the ones he did answer.

What is your character Dr. Andover like?

Robert Englund: In the purest sense he’s going to be, he’s fulfilling the ingredients of the mad scientists. But I’m not planning on lifting my hands and cackling at the moon like Jacob’s Ladder or Frankenstein. I’m probably borderline genius and I come out with a controversial thing to treat phobias. You know in the back of the magazines, like the New York Post, about how you go and have the clippings of fat kids camp or something like that? I probably ran a clinic like that, that caters to wealthy adolescent teenagers with phobias that you could not live with. Any older and something went wrong, we’re not sure with what yet, we’ll probably get back to it and it’s probably its Danielle Harris and her fear of the dark. Maybe I was sued, maybe I lost my license, maybe I was operating with and I use Kane as a bodyguard and male nurse. My other assistant, our cold nurse ratchet played by Lisa Wilcox, and I moved south of the border where I wasn’t required to have a medical license but because of my great track record people still send me their children. Things begin to go wrong, and my theory is that the chamber itself is acquiring a residue of fear from people that I cured and its beginning to bond like molecules and it gets a bit stylized. Andover relieves well and he’s probably got a 95 percent cure rate and things are starting to tear at the seams now and that’s where we pick up our story south of the border. I mean well, but I’m starting to deteriorate a bit emotionally as the show progresses. I think perhaps I will become a full blown paranoid mad scientist, not evil but psychologically damaged, and I think that Kane who probably is going to become accidentally heroic. So there is this interesting cross between these two dynamics and Danielle will serve as this cry among the darkness survivor warrior woman. And I’m obsessed, why I’m able to not fix her and as an actor I can use that in order to get into the brink of madness or obsessive behavior thats basically Andover has.

There is a lot of scary people here. Have you ever had an incident where a fan kind of scared the hell out of you?

Robert Englund: I’ve had such great fortune with my Nightmare on Elm Street fans and from Strangeland and my redneck fans from 2001 Maniacs. There are different and many because of all the box sets and DVDs and video and cable, I’m on my third or fourth generation of Nightmare On Elm Street fans and other fans. My only weird one was way back on V, she was obsessed with my character on the show. She saw me as, dare I say Christ-like, the good alien and with my blonde curls, my youth, my innocence and I had done Godspell I brought a little bit of that to my character she literally dressed like my character. She wore his wardrobe to places that were appropriate like Comic-Con and inappropriate. I was giving out an award and I was giving an award to Tracey Walter and it was an normal event at USC. And she taped her boobs down, hair permed colored like mine she’s really smart and sent me great letters and really great stuff. I ended up yelling at her, saying you should be a screenwriter, you should be writing for television, put your energy into that instead of just being focused on me and my character on V. You can still be a fan but quit writing a 10 page letter, write a short story. I think that it kind of got through to her and I can tell that maybe, sometimes television comes into your home its different than renting a movie. It comes in for free and you can fix on something sometimes and if there’s a correlating something something that makes you particularly vulnerable and you connect with something you can step over the line a little bit with your obsession. Its the only time that’s happened to me. I think that she moved recently to la and she was very lonely and the show came on, very imaginative, and because it was a mini series that meant you could abandon yourself for four hours all at once which was a big eventin those days. And I think that it is (the show) a metaphor for the occupation of Europe with the nazis and I think thats what happened with that particular fan. I think its because Freddy has a dark, cynical sense of humor and that even if they try on the costume or put on the makeup and want to play the cruel clown that Freddy is, but never want to be him. Like ‘Oh I wish I had third degree burns’. I just never had that experiences (with Freddy fans) I have hugged and kissed and scared many with tens of thousands of fans and I think it has to do with Freddy’s kind of cynicism and I don’t think nobdoy wants to be Freddy. They want him to be the logo as a good scare for A Nightmare on Elm Street fans.

What is your take on how internet is coming into the home. What’s your take on web series?

Robert Englund: There’s a whole bunch of things with the web and one of the things is that its not cost prohibited. It’s a place where new talent can really get their foot in the door. I love home made but I love production value which is what were attempting to do. We’re attempting to raise the bar on internet production value, like what we did with V. Before that we had a girl in green makeup being chased by William Shatner, now we’ve really elevated special effects and cgi and were doing that with Rob (Hall) and it looks so wonderful. It looks like a David Cronenberg movie. It looks that good. Danielle is our surrogate on the blog-o-sphere on the show as her character tries to tell the world about what’s going on in the clinic.

Now actors Danielle Harris and Lucas Till are ushered on in. The remainder of the round table event of sorts stays centered on these two.

When Robert left he was telling us about how you have additional content where you have additional content where your video blogging.

Danielle: I’m sort of sharing what the real world what is going on inside of here because we are trapped in the middle of nowhere and unbenowst to them it is spreading all over the place. People are coming in voluntarily to come in and have their phobias cured while I am in hell. Its almost like glorified like ‘How cool, that is so cool I get to go through that awful experience I wanna go’. I have these scenes where I say to them ‘Are you an idiot I told you not to come’ and I’m sort of the resident in this place.

How long is a long time?

Danielle: Since I was a child. Parents passed away since I was a kid, been there probably since I was seven or eight. I can’t get out because I’m not fixed and he’s sort of a father figure. He’s sort of the protagonist and because of this fear its not one thing specific. It’s scotophobia, it is a fear of the dark, but its whats in the dark where my actual fears are. Its not just the dark, its just the things that live inside the dark and once you guys see the trailer, there’s a lot of things there so you can’t really pin point. I think hes become obsessed with me and he’s the only family that I’ve known. As much as I don’t trust him I think he’s brilliant but he does some stuff that I don’t agree with. There’s some stuff he’s trying to help us with and their is specifically me that has been in there to begin with so my choices are really limited.

Lucas, now your in this thing too, tell us your relationship with Robert (Englund)?

Lucas: Yeah. I said yes even before read the script and robert said ‘Why not yeah’. I mean he’s very loyal and I’m the same way. I did my first real movie when I was twelve and ever since then anytime he asks me to do something I just do it. We went to a concert last night, I’m really sore today (laughs). So thats where our relationship is.

What’s the atmosphere like on set?

Danielle: Its really mysterious. You know I filmed in so many scary places in my career that I don’t even really look at them anymore. It doesn’t even phase me. I put on my scrubs, walk down the hallway and its like ‘Oh, a dead baby in an incubator covered in blood thats cool’. You know, all that random stuff that you don’t think about and when someone hasn’t grown up with it you think ‘Whoa, ew thats gross, what is that?’ but its just another day on the job. Basically I definitely wouldn’t want to be in this clinic at night by myself, there’s no way. ‘Oh my god no its a creepy, creepy eerie haunted place’ and so we did five episodes in six days like thats even though its like five minutes per episode. We’re doing like eight pages a day, we were just jamming and as an actor your like ‘Oh did that go ok we did two takes. Did we get enough coverage?’ and you like look, we don’t know how it will look and you see it and your like ‘Oh my God’.

Lucas: The best stuff happens when your rushed.

Danielle: Yeah I saw it and I had no idea it looks so good.

Lucas: I just saw the trailer last night and it looks sick.

Danielle: Yeah it looks sick, I’m really excited by it.

Does it feel more like TV or film?

Danielle: It felt like film, like a low budget independent film. ‘Hurry hurry hurry up, hurry up. We’ve got buckets of blood, we have to get this. We didn’t get that, we can’t get it tomorrow, we have three minutes to get it’.

Lucas: Yeah I had to direct myself once and cause there was no director in the room.

Danielle: Yeah that’s what happens you get first second and third unit going and you just get thinking that Rob (Hall) trusts us. He knows that we know what were doing and we don’t need to be directed, as much as we love it, and just kind of lets us go for it. Then he watches dailies and goes ‘Oh thats cool’.

Melissa: With only like limited number of days, how was it just working with these actors. How was the experience?

Danielle: I think that we are all so trained and doing it for so long that you can throw us into any situation and you can say to us ‘You’ve got three minutes to get this’. We’ll knock it up out of the park. Who your playing opposite there’s no learning to be done. You don’t, how do I say it, it’s just there its just there. You don’t have to rehearse it, don’t have to do it twenty times, you can just walk in look at somebody in the eyes say your dialogue all prepared because you can not be and it becomes what it becomes.

Lucas: Maybe you were prepared but sometimes I found myself as a scene was starting to look at my lines. But yeah, I had scenes with Robert Englund and Kane Hobber and the woman who played my mom and they’re riduclously gifted. It made it that much easier cause I’m just really reacting. I’m not acting just reacting to what they’re giving me and it makes it that much easier.

During the scenes when Kane was scaring them…

Danielle: Kane was scaring them? I think that they were lying because he likes to pretend that he’s this evil mean guy but he’s like the nicest, biggest teddy bear. Made them tell you that you he was scaring them on set…

Lucas: Hold on, hold on. But he did take people back into rooms in Linda Vista Hospital where we were shooting and would close the door on them.

Danielle: Yeah he’s a prankster.

Lucas: And even just on the little catwalk on there he’s doing all of his freakin grabbing and is like ‘Oh your just tripping and falling’ by scaring. By playing his character then no, he’s a big nice guy and tough guy in scary and realistic situations.

Do you watch any web series?

Danielle: Not really, there’s none really that I…

Lucas: No no, but thats the thing because this is great.

Danielle: It’s not the same, it doesn’t feels like the web series where you are walking down the street and talking with your friend.

Lucas: …and like shaky Youtube video phone crap.

Danielle: Yeah you remember that show back in the day called Undeclared? It sort of seems like its more college-y and its kind of missing a creative element.

Lucas: And that’s why this is completely different, and like I’ve got friends who’ve shot web series before and like I never want to be a part of anything. But then Rob (Hall) asks me to be on this and I come on set and I’m like ‘I can’t believe this is how we’re going to shoot a web series, it looks like were shooting a full feature’.

Danielle: Yeah I know it really reads like a movie. Its going to break the mold, its going to shape how web series are supposed to be. Its going to raise the bar with it. Tell us what you guys think after you see it.

Fear Clinic will start showing this October only on FEARnet, so stay tuned for that!

Miss Iron Man 2 at Comic Con? So did I. Want one of those slick Star Expo ‘74 shirts? Me too. Still can’t find the footage? That’s where we can help you, slightly. What Favreau and company brought stole everyone’s girlfriend and punched their mothers. The word coming out and still buzzing on these here interwebs is that babies were conceived and Osama bin Laden was ready to turn himself in for his crimes. That, and the entire Con couldn’t get Stark off of their lips. For people who saw it, wounds and ailments were healed. For people (like me) who missed it, much rage and anger was brought upon Comic Con’s family.

Which is why we should give a thousand thanks to the people over at ScreenCrave for supplying us the footage! Well…kind of. Y’see, it’s a combination of some of us journalists not getting in and because we can’t show the footage to you that ScreenCrave took it upon themselves to recreate what was shown. What follows is a very interesting yet humorous recreation of the Footage of Footage, complete with James Rhodes. It might cure cancer, but it’s likely the closest we’ll be to the real footage for a while.

You can view the “re-enactment” here.

David Leslie Johnson is a name I’m sure a fair number of you are not familiar with. What you are familiar with though is his script work which will plant itself on the big screen with the ucpoming movie The Orphan. I was able to sit down with him for a few minutes and chat it up about himself, the film and any future projects that he is working on.

Melissa: I’ve got quite a few questions for you. how did you come up with the particular story (for The Orphan)?

David: It was kind of a not typical process. the story was developed originally in house with an executive there named alice mason and they really wanted to do an evil kid movie and they were looking for writers to come in and kind of give them their take on it. they gave me the first three pages of the treatment within just the first act of the movie. It set up the family, and the premise of the family that adopts this girl. But then they end up bringing the girl home and you know something’s going to go wrong and they said what’s next, what happens? so then I came up with the ending and actually worked backwards towards the jumping off point that they have given me and pitch them my take on the ending. It was very different from what they had in mind, but in a good way, and so they hired me to write the script.

Melissa: Is there any sort of inspiration for how you sculpted out any of the characters from yourself or anyone you knew or did it come from your own mind like that person’s going to be this way..

David: Yeah (laughs) See, the characters came up a lot out of the story that I wanted to tell. Like one of the things that Ester does is she, I wanted her to be a very smart character. To be a character who really analyzes people and their relationships, sort of Hannibal Lecter style. And so the characters, I wanted to make them sort of complex so that Ester could exploit their weaknesses. I wanted to, you know, to give the characters and have them be sort of multi dimensional so that A) you believe them and it gave Ester the tools she needed to do what she needs to do in the movie. I don’t know if that makes any sense..

Melissa: How was it working with the director (Jaume Collet-Serra), seeing how he liked it. Of course he liked it or we wouldn’t be talking right now!

David: He did like it, though I think I wound up making things difficult for him because I had made such an intricate plot that when it became time to shoot inevitably there are things you can’t shoot, things that you run out of time to shoot and things that for time reasons they cut out. There weren’t a lot of things because everything was like, one thing was a set-up for another and that thing was a set-up for another thing and they pulled this one piece out so it wound up not making sense. So, it was fun but I think in the end it made the editing process a bit difficult (laughs)

Melissa: Compared to how it (the story) was originally in your mind to the final cut, how much of the original creation do you see on the screen?

David: Its a weird combination of being very close to what I imagined and a lot better. They were really, the script is un-mentally the same from when I first started which is very little difference in the end product. But the director and the cast brought so much to it. They sort of brought it to life in a way that I didn’t know, I didn’t thought possible. You know, vera and isabel and just everyone. ariana, cc,jimmy, they really inhabit those characters and you know, when you go to see a horror movie you don’t necessarily your gonna leave going “Wow, those actors are really good” and thats what your going to get from this movie, thats what I think that impressed me the most.

Melissa: I’ve got to say that the previews alone, it doesn’t look like any regular “I’m going to go and mess you up” kind of horror movie. There seems to be a lot more going into it, a lot more complex than what you normally see. I want to ask as far as like how you started and everything as far as screenwriting is concerned, who got you on the path to doing it?

David: I don’t know, you know I was always a big reader and like that sort of, like in second grade I was writing plays. I think that reading sort of like naturally lead me to like wanting to create, you know, stories. For a long time I thought I wanted to be a novelist and at some point I realize that sometimes that the things that I was wanting to write in books would be really movies, that they were very visual and that I am not exactly sure who or where it started but I have loved movies ever since I was a kid. I guess it was at some point I realized that these were written. I grew up in Ohio and I don’t know that I really paid a lot of thought of where the movies came from. They come from the box in the back of the theater thats shining the light down from there, I didn’t know where they came from and at some point I realized that I could combine the two loves. That I can be writing movies and i think that’s…I dont know where it came from but at some point I decided to combine the two.

Melissa: As far as with script writing and everything like that, is there anything we can expect from you in the future?

David: Yeah I have a sort of fantasy horror thing going on now with Appian Way again and Warner Bros. Its in the vein of Sleepy Hollow, that kind of thing. and were working on another piece called Lake Mungo, well the original project is called Lake Mungo. Its an adaptation of an Australian movie; its a ghost story about a family thats haunted by the ghost of their dead daughter and the original movie is really great. Its a very emotional supernatural story which I think makes it unique and I’m looking forward to getting started on that.

Melissa: It seems to be a pretty interesting take on supernatural and everything like that, I guess the more supernatural emotional aspect I was talking about, it kind of reminded me a little like Poltergeist.

David: Yeah Poltergeist, those are my favorite horror movies, those where underneath there’s a really simple character driven emotional story driven kind of it all. I mean it has a lot of special effects, scary scenes and like one of my favorite ghost stories ever but its really just about a family that looses their daughter, and its about that they need to get her back. I think thats what I liked about Lake Mungo, is that its very very scary but its really about a family thats grieving and how they’re going to move on to the next stage of their lives.

Melissa: As far as like movies and everything and projects to do in the future, future projects, is there any sort of director you’d like to work with? Like if you could work with anybody.

David: Well I just met, I just saw Sam Raimi at the premiere and I remember coming to Comic-Con years ago and there he was at the premiere last night. I love Sam Raimi and I think thats the first one off the top of my head anyways.

The Orphan is out in theaters right now, so catch it as soon as you can!

We visited Pandora, entered the Imaginarium, saw a New Moon, had an expo with Stark Industries and actually entered Flynn’s Arcade. Nerd Fest 2009, also known as San Diego Comic Con International 2009, has come and gone and the experience has been one for the ages. In terms of what was on display and what the studios brought, it was a slam dunk. Stuff might have underwhelmed, but this attendee didn’t hear rumblings of anything being negative except for the obvious, like Twilight Saga: New Moon (assuming you’re not female and twelve or under.) Comic Con 2009, for the most part, was a win for all parties as they catered to their audiences well and generated the hype necessary for the coming year.

The big buzz surrounding the Con, and was the show piece for this year, was Avatar. Little was known about the project other than it was going to be a “game changer” for visual effects and push them to the extreme. What we saw was a nice throwback to Aliens (the King of the World’s best work) followed by a glimpse at the story which involves Sam Worthington’s character wanting to walk again by using an ‘Avatar’, a mix of a Navi (the blue creatures in the film) and human DNA. This what enables us to explore Pandora, and how amazing it is to behold. When August 21st rolls around and the general audience gets to witness the footage it will be believed James Cameron really did fly everyone to an unknown planet and film there. The effects here are unparalleled and (as Devin Faraci put it) evolutionary which has to be seen to be believed. For me, this took the cake as the Best in Show as it delivered what I wanted. In addition, it was nice to see two sci-fi legends in Cameron and Sigourney Weaver together again, and in person.

Unfortunately though, this isn’t about what pleased me but rather what did the general audience react to. While Avatar played strong, some were let down that it didn’t live up to the high expectations beset on it. There was one panel that stole the show from the Na’vi and declared itself the true winner, and undoubtedly it’s Iron Man 2. The footage seemed to have shown off that Jon Favreau kept everything that worked about the first picture and improved upon the action. Nick Fury was there, asking Stark to join his ’super secret boy band’ as was Whiplash who took out a car in true villainous fashion. Rhodey was right when he said ‘Next time baby’ as we get our first glimpse at War Machine. In a word, all of this was awesome. While I missed out on it, Melissa caught it and described it as an orgasmic experience. Apparently so did everyone else who sat in Hall H Saturday as you couldn’t go five feet without seeing a blue Stark Expo ‘74 on someone. Bottom line, Iron Man 2 blew away everything else there as evidenced by the loud roar that came from Hall Hell Saturday and the fact they played the footage twice. Where’s that SDCC 2009 Champion belt for Favreau?

Runners-up would be Kick-Ass and Jonah Hex, or Warner Bros. in general. They showcased all of their upcoming pictures, five in total. Where the Wild Things Are just looks all the more great and tugged at pretty much everyone. The Book of Eli is just going to be Denzel kicking ass for two hours, complete with a great, dynamic panel from Mr. Washington and Gary Oldman. We need a buddy cop film with these two as they play off of the other incredibly well. A Nightmare on Elm Street finally showed off it’s stuff and for the most part was impressive. The trailer was slick and gave us a tiny glimpse at Jackie Earle Haley in full Freddy make-up. Indeed, he’s perfect for the part and the footage left everyone wanting more. The Box was likely the weakest of what Warner Bros. brought as Cameron Diaz gave it away. It didn’t matter, as that was just the calm before the storm of Jonah Hex came through. On a side note, Megan Fox on photos is one thing. Megan Fox in person makes you forget her toe-thumbs and is just dazzling with beauty. Oh, the footage…right. It looks like everything Van Helsing wanted to be, and wasn’t. The dual machine-guns where the real kicker and even evoked me to applause. The WB closed with Sherlock Holmes and while it pumped me up for it in a way the trailer didn’t, it was clear Jonah Hex was the movie that everyone was going to champion. As far as Kick-Ass goes, let’s just say it looks to be a fun, ridiculous actioner complete with a ten year-old firing off the big C-word. Oh, she also reloads her weapons mid air. You may want to throw Disney in here too, but mainly for Tron Legacy and Flynn’s Arcade which was next to only Tony Stark for the Greatest In Show.

Which leaves us with the real losers, bringing us back to Avatar. To be fair, nothing really lost as everything that was played received generally favorable buzz but Avatar had to be something special. With all the hype, this had to do better than Iron Man 2 did and at the end of the day no one really discussed it like they were with some other heavy hitters. It wasn’t bad footage at all, but it wasn’t captivating. It would still be in the discussion for top five of the Con, even if that number IS five. This was like a the last few Super Bowls before XLII wherein there’s a ton of build up that doesn’t end up on everyone’s lips like it’s hailed to do. Maybe the fifteen minutes will help, maybe they won’t. It might seem like I’m doing a 180 on my thoughts, but I’m not. Here, I’m speaking strictly from how the buzz was after and what it was planned to be, not my personal thoughts.

Overall, Comic Con 2009 was a success. Nothing really disappointed and on display was some terrific footage for all parties. The coming months for film should truly be spectacular from an entertainment standpoint and an early prediction; Green Lantern wins Comic Con 2010. That’s my fanboyism talking.

Top 5 Comic-Con Events

1. Iron Man 2
2. Flynn’s Arcade
3. Kick-Ass
4. Jonah Hex
5. Avatar

Oh, and what of New Moon? Well, this guy will explain it:

Your probably thinking to yourself,” Melissa, what the hell? You put up Zombieland, 2012 and Iron Man 2 within seconds after the panels ended, and you can’t at least put up a little bit for Kevin Smith right away?” Due to covering a lot of stuff that Saturday and taking a crapload of pictures, not only did I reach full capacity on my camera a third into the Smith panel but my computer died. From these lovely list of problems, I still have some small video footage of the Kevin Smith panel along with quite some notes on what he touched base upon.

During the panel Smith touched base upon what his next project will be, a hockey movie of sorts, and that the title of it will be called Hit Somebody.

He constantly calls his upcoming movie, A Couple of Dicks, “Lethal Weapon but with 60 percent less action.”

He still complains about the guy from Comic-Con 07. I’m surprised he still even remembers him, especially since he didn’t show up to say a smart ass comment. Smith brings himself down saying that he proved the guy right with the not-so-great domestic release numbers of Zack and Miri Make A Porno.

Kevin brings up the Twilight Saga: New Moon clips and everyone starts to boo, yelling obscenities about how crappy the movie is. Smith starts comparing it to the old Hustler magazines, inches away from it being full blown out porn of the teen kind. Then he goes on about how Robert Pattinson should take full advantage of the popularity and hook up with some cougars.

The question about the censoring of the title for Zack & Miri and possibly for A Couple of Dicks could be. He mentions how all the channels that will show the TV spots in the future will show the full title but some of them will only be shown after 9 at night. His reasoning for it,” Were all still paying for Janet’s tit, that boob haunts me.”

He explains about why Bruce Willis did not show up to Comic-Con, and after asking him if he wanted to go one time he believes Bruce thought he actually said ‘Commi Con’.

He goes on about how the Green Hornet comic will be released around Christmas/New Years on comic stands, and how its his only way to show off his script that he feels nobody wanted.

He describes A Couple of Dicks in some more wording,” Abbott and Castella movie with guns and violence and sh*t.”

When someone brings up a question about him kicking someone’s ass in Celebrity boxing, people start shouting random names to him (particularly Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Garner for some reasons), but he claims no matter what he’d get his ass kicked.

Kevin expresses how much he respects The Dark Knight but not Christian Bale’s voice that was tweaked when he was Batman. He continues to make fun of it for a full couple of minutes.

Someone shoots him a question about hiring Nicolas Cage in one of his movies, he then continues on saying how he never thought he could be able to hire someone like that, in a sense living the dream of that ‘best movie’ that he’d want to make and showing how sad it is in a comedical sense.

Smith is apparently surprising himself with the dailies that he’s seen so far for Dicks. He’s hyping us up by saying it,” looks like a slick Hollywood movie and sh*t”. Hope it doesn’t disappoint Mr. Smith.

There’s the bullet recap, but look back on here this time tomorrow for footage that I’m going to cram down to a reasonable size that I filmed to throw up on here. Hurrah for Comic-Con 2009!

What was next to Iron Man 2 at Comic Con this year you ask? Was it the awesomeness of Avatar? Nope. How about Depp’s appearance at the Alice in Wonderland ordeal? Slightly. Even the surprise of the show, the Kick-Ass footage? Close, but no cigar. There was one place everyone wanted to be, and that’s Flynn’s Arcade. Yes, that’s right Disney took a vacated spot downtown and turned it into the arcade from Disney’s 1982 sci-fi flick Tron. Some would argue that it was the best thing at the convention and they might be right. What would happen is that you’re allowed to enter and play a good wealth of arcade hits from the 80’s for free, complete with Space Paranoids and the actual Tron game. After fifteen minutes of play time, the lights and neon signs flicker, the Tron game slides away and the walls behind it open up, allowing everyone to waltz into a dark abyss. What follows is concept art and this…

That’s right. The Light Cycle was there for everyone to admire as it was on a turntable display. As we exited, the fine people hosting the event handed out Flynn’s Arcade and Flynn Lives t-shirts, in addition to an exclusive Tron Legcay poster. Here are what the shirts look like:

In addition, the Tron Legacy trailer can be viewed here. I still want a Light Cycle and suit.

3:57- I’m ready for this panel to go, music is already starting to blast out of the speakers and everyone is horribly anxious. AC/DC is always great to listen to.

3:58-People are all over the floor right now, blocking the pathway and nobody cares. I think we’ve reached past capacity but nobody cares.

3:59- I hope they get their patooties out really soon, I’d hate for this panel out of all panels to start up late along with many many upset/anxious fans.

4:00- Everyone is up at this point (almost) and I wonder who exactly will show up other than the awesome Downey Jr and Farveau.

4:02- The suspense is killing some people next to me, not literally of course.

4:03- They’re starting to put the name tags up. Kevin Feige, Jon Farveau, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell.

4:04/06- Here it goes, and they are going to finish cramming us the hell in or else the fire marshal won’t let us start the panel. Everyone hurries up to finish getting seats so this could get started.

4:07- Scolding us about not putting up anything on there. Somebody never listens, just like the first Iron Man footage at 07.

4:08- Everyone wants the moderator from Access Hollywood to shutup and let out them all.

4:09- Kevin Feige walks out, they’re doing questions with him first. Goes off about keeping within the same terms like the first time. Footage time that includes Stark in Iron Man uniform talking to Nick Fury, Black Widow kicking ass, Don Cheadle dawning the War Machine outfit and blowing up everything to smithereens. Along with it is Stark being interrogated by the senator about trying to stop being Iron Man, and Rhodes talking to the character Justin about what kind of weapons that would be needed in order to assemble War Machine. (This will be elaborated on as soon as possible).

4:19- “Your the people we wanted to show this off to first, thank you so much for all of your support.” Farveau is a Comic-Con god.

4:20- Question: What’s it like playing Tony Stark the second time around? “I never had it so good, such a great role and just out of the opprotunity that Feige and Farveau gave me. I’m so thrilled to sit next to the talent and that we nailed it the first time, it proves to us that other people were interested to coming onboard.” Robert Downey Jr.

4:21- Question: Whats it like being Rhodes? “I’ve never worked on a movie with this kind of scope, didn’t know what to expect and I really heavily relied on Kevin (Feige), Robert (Downey Jr) and Jon (Farveau) who figured out the right ones, how to play this guy. They were really good, gave me really good guidance. It was a really great experience and you guys saw it (the footage) before we even saw it. Roll it again!” Of course, they aren’t going to disobey Don Cheadle so they roll the footage once again.

4:22- Question: What’s it like wearing the War Machine outfit? “Its, its heavy!”

4:23- Question: What did you do in order to get the role and what did you do to train? “Wow, my goodness, well deep knee bends and some lunges. That came out the wrong way!” (People definitely laughed and whistled) “I didn’t really have a formal audition, met with Jon and Kevin a year before, tried to convince them.” Johansson

“Her audition is her body of work.” Downey Jr on Johansson

4:23- “She showed up and her hair was red and I was like wow, you really want the part don’t you? She dyed her hair before she had the part. (After she did) she got in shape, did the stunts, worked her tail off with the stunt guys. Most of the stuff that she does in the movie she did it herself.” Jon Farveau on Johansson

4:24- (Huge applause and cheers for Rockwell) Question: How awesome is it to be here in Hall H? “Its amazing, this is phenomenal and the trailer was phenomenal, it blew my mind. I’m really happy to be here.”

4:25- (Question and Answer starts for the audience) Question: You guys are all freakin amazing, everything in this movie is going to collide to make this orgasmic. For Farveau, you said there’s going ot be an Avenger movie, are you going to be attached to it? “I’ve been looking at the prep work and artwork for Avengers and I’m going to be involved in some capacity for it, especially since it doesn’t shoot until after Iron Man 2 is done.”

4:26- Question: Guy starts going off about being an intern back when Iron Man first came out and doing all sorts of observations on minor costume changes. Farveau jokingly puts him in his place.

4:27- Question: How was it going head to head with (Mickey) Rourke? “I honestly barely even know what to say, I thought I was eccentric. But no, he is something else and he wanted me to send his sicnere regrets but he couldn’t come in and wanted to particpate with you folks. Actually he has most of his onscreen time with Justin Hammer (Rockwell) so I’ll past that over to Mr. Rockwell.

“I love Mickey, Mickey’s fabulous, we had a great time together. No, Mickey’s a consummate actor, very professional and we smoked a couple of cigs together.”

4:28- Talks about how they combined Whiplash with Ivan Venko, and how in the movie the Whiplash suit is his first attempt at technology. “When I told him that the character just got out of a Russian prison, the next thing I heard he was in a Russian prison and I had to learn from TMZ.” Farveau

“Not from a crime or anything.” Downey Jr

4:29- Question: What are some of the main themes of this movie and how do they apply to the characters? “One thing that we already talked about is that mostly through Robert’s character is that the idea of needing help, working with other people and that no man is an island, referring to that and dramatically playing on that throughout the film.” Don Cheadle

“There were a lot of pressure (Tony Stark) of staying as Iron Man and being Iron Man in the public eye. Are we following the Demon in the Bottle storyline…the stone that we established in the first film isn’t as dark but we did want to go into what the character would be dealing with over his pressure and maintaining his own identity who is a larger than life character who’s in fact saving the world. Its an exploration between Robert’s character and what happens to him.” Jon Farveau

4:31- Question: How was the training in the movie? Johansson goes off about how much she put her time and effort into doing as many of her own stunts as possible. Security is having a hard time keeping everyone in their seats still, I manage to stay hidden towards the front.

4:38- Guy gives support for Rockwell in Moon. Question: How much of your performance was informed by Terrance and how much was your own? Says that he makes the role his own and tries to get a little out of him (Howard) as well.

4:39- Question: How much influence from the source material, what impact did he have on this film?

4:40- The creator of Iron Man (in the comics) makes his way out of the front row to the stage with the others to answer the question. They used very heavy influence on him and the viewpoint of his creation. He’s incredibly proud of the first movie and says the second one will “knock your socks off”.

4:41- Last question (kind of) is really stupid and Downey Jr says “Your a smartass” while they get rid of the person.

4:42- Question: Don, what do you prefer to play more, the good guy in Iron Man 2 or the bad guy in Meteor Man? (laughs) “I don’t even know what that other movie is. I had an incredible experience in Iron Man 2 and I look forward to doing it again.”

Iron Man 2 comes out in theaters everywhere in Summer 2010.
