Del Toro to direct Hobbit films?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the mastermind behind Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, and the lesser-known, The Devil’s Backbone is in talks with New Line to helm the two prequels to The Lord of the Rings-saga.

Since Peter Jackson is tied up with other projects (The Lovely Bones & Tintin) he hand-picked Del Toro for the job. Both Jackson and Del Toro will oversee the writing of the film once the strike is lifted.

The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf who go on a quest for the treasure of a dragon named Smaug.
