Does the World Need a Blair Witch 3?

I was as late as you could possibly be to the whole Blair Witch Project phenomenon. I was a mere youngster during the movie’s theatrical release — far too young to see it in theaters. My dad scooped up a VHS copy of it from Blockbuster (in an eerily blank black case), and there it sat shrink-wrapped on our shelf for about seven years, never to be touched.

That is, until boredom seized me one summer night and I decided to give it a whirl. To my dismay, I found a severe lack of horror and a surplus of snot and dead leaves. I had missed the bandwagon, the internet craze, the birth of viral marketing. The whole film was a jump scare to the suspense built outside the theater.

We’ve since seen a (reportedly terrible) sequel, and now, ten years from the original film’s release, creators Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick have discussed with the BBC their ideas for a third film in the pantheon. Reportedly, they are unsure whether to craft a film in the guerrilla vein of the first film or try for a more “polished” sequel.

Sanchez and Myrick have tossed about ideas to create a prequel “that takes place in the late 1700s and looks like a [Stanley] Kubrick movie with gritty looking people and lighting,” but are currently looking to continue the story taking place after the events of the first film.

This all might currently be hot air, as it has been a decade since the original film was released, and the creators of the film have had less than successful careers following The Blair Witch Project. However, the concept of another film revolving around the Blair Witch isn’t essentially bad — after all, in a market saturated with zombies, werewolves and vampires, it seems that witches deserve a little time to shine, right? Or has the moment truly passed for this franchise? Let us know what you think in the comments.

This is almost as bad as having 6 Saw movies. No need at all except to capitalize on something that was original at the time.
