We see movies being remade all the time, especially ones that have had a consistent fan base, so it was really only a matter of time before a remake of 1973’s The Exorcist came about. What comes as somewhat of a surprise is that the classic horror film is being remade by the original writer and director.
The movie The Exorcist was based on the novel by William Peter Blatty, who then adapted his own novel to fit the screen. The remake of the film comes as a result of Blatty feeling like he can finally work out a script that will include several elements that he had to leave out in the original.
In an interview with Cemetery Dance Publications, Blatty said,
“…I might have it my way in the near future, inasmuch as I’ve written an Exorcist miniseries script that not only faithfully includes all the main elements of the novel, but also some rather spooky new material and scenes, as well as a totally new (and perhaps much more satisfying) ending. I’ve also updated it. Billy Friedkin has agreed to direct.“
Two things that stand out in Blatty’s statement are the fact that he describes his new script as being for a miniseries, and that William (Billy) Friedkin is set to direct.
One of the issues Blatty faced in his original script was that it was considered to be far too lengthy, which forced Blatty to cut out parts from the novel. While it’s not for sure that the Exorcist remake will be turned into a miniseries, it would allow Blatty a much greater chunk of time to work with, which would allow him to reinstate the elements he originally cut.
The fact that Friedkin is signed on to direct should be seen as a definite positive for the film’s update. Like Blatty, Friedkin was part of the original Exorcist, serving as the film’s director.
With both the original writer and director on board, the remake of The Exorcist could likely prove to be a very well done endeavor that will maintain much of the feel of the original. Whether it is done in miniseries or movie form, Blatty and Friedkin’s update of The Exorcist definitely has the potential to be a remake that doesn’t just feel like a cheap knockoff of the original.
