BioShock is seriously one of the greatest games ever made. The whole thing plays out like a well scripted novel, and immerses you in its world to where you actually feel like you’ve been and visited Rapture. That, and the joy it brings to catch a grenade in mid-air only to launch it back at your foes. Fighting Big Daddy’s proved relatively simple for me, but the real beauty was in the game’s story, which could be one of the best sci-fi mysteries ever told.
Universal seems to think it can break the bad game-to-film mold that’s been bestowed on pretty much every game adaptation ever. Gore Verbinski will remain as producer and has informed the LA Times 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo will tackle the complex story and world of BioShock.
Y’know, interesting choice. I wasn’t a fan of Juan Carlos’ last venture, but I certainly didn’t hate the film. From what I remember of it, it did have a nice atmosphere which will be essential to the making of this project. All for him? Maybe not, but it will be interesting to see where he goes and what kind of a job he’ll do with it. What worries me, ironically, is Verbinski. No doubt the guy has a solid visual style and he’s been very serious about doing the game justice. However, on a personal level, I hated The Ring and never saw the hooplah over the Pirates films. But again it’s his determination to make the project right that doesn’t make me doubt that this can turn into the first truly good video game adaptation.
BioShock 2 comes out in January 2010 on PS3, 360 and PC. Buy it if you like your life.
