In an not-so-surprising turn of events over this first weekend of August, the newest Judd Apatow movie Funny People trumps over the competition. Starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann and many others, the dramedy took in about 23.4 million. With its 75 million dollar budget, and the huge legion of fans for the actors and the director himself, I’m sure they’ll be able to collect the budget back and some profit along with it.
Another film released this weekend was the ridiculously kid friendly Aliens In The Attic. With the young talents of Ashley Tisdale, Carter Jenkins, Ashley Boettcher and quite some more actors, the film opened to a measly 7.8 million. Since this sucker did take a bit more of money to make, and judging from the some what poor marketing, this could possibly be the highest weekend gross for this family film.
Last of the brand new mainstream flicks is the crime thriller film The Collector. Though barely anyone heard about it, and personally I did not see any television spots for the horror film of sorts, it still managed to get some people to watch it making about 3.6 million. I do not mean to be rude, but I cannot see it making a very high gross, which is not hard to really predict.
Honorable mention goes along to The Hangover which is still amazingly up on the top ten making itself some more money. Right now its current domestic gross sits at a pretty 255 million, pretty awesome for a sleeper hit of a comedy. Enough with the jibber jabber, onto the top ten intake:
Weekend Box Office (July 31 – August 2)
- Funny People ($23.4 Million)
- Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince ($17.7 Million)
- G-Force ($17 Million)
- The Ugly Truth ($13 Million)
- Aliens In The Attic ($7.8 Million)
- Orphan ($7.2 Million)
- Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs ($5.3 Million)
- The Hangover ($5 Million)
- The Proposal ($4.8 Million)
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($4.6 Million)
Well that’s it for this weekend, but now some of the bigger suckers are going to seep their way out on what I call the home stretch of the summer season (bummer, summer is already coming to a close). For this Friday there’s A Perfect Getaway, GI Joe: Rise of Cobra, Julie & Julia, Paper Heart and many others. Make sure you watch out for an exclusive interview with some of the cast/crew of Paper Heart. Keep trekking over to the movie theaters folks!
