We recently talked about Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick’s work on a Venom spin-off of the Spiderman series. The character of Venom, alias Eddie Brock, was last seen in Spiderman 3 as played by Topher Grace.
Now, it’s looking like Gary Ross – the writer of the upcoming Spiderman 4 and director of Seabiscuit – is looking to sign a deal to re-write the script by Reese and Wernick in order to direct the film from his pass at the screenplay.
Grace is unlikely to return, as we reported today that he’s in talks to join Nimrod Antal’s Predators. The character himself will also change from a seedy, unlikeable villain into “an antihero who becomes a defender of the innocent.”
I’ve said before that I hope this film distances itself as much as possible from Spiderman 3. However, I don’t think this is the right direction to take. Forget antiheroes, let’s just follow a villain and take advantage of a chance to capitalize on that opportunity.
What do you think about the Venom spin-off? Is Ross equipped to deliver a good film, or will this be another Ghost Rider? Let us know in the comments!
