Joe Dante & Chris Columbus talk ‘Gremlins 3′

Gentlemen, I implore you...'Gremlins 2' did not suck

Gentlemen, I implore you...'Gremlins 2' did not suck

I’ve gotten used to the fact that movies I cherished as a kid will all be redone and made into a superficial mess of CGI and Jack Black. Or, at least, I thought I did.

In an interview with Empire, Gremlins director Joe Dante, along with creator Chris Columbus discusses rumors regarding a supposed Gremlins 3. “I hear they’re going to make another one soon,” Dante said. “The actors from the first two are too old to do a proper sequel, so I’m sure when the new one arrives it will be a remake of the original.” Okay, fair enough, Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates are ancient and dusty senior citizens. A sequel wouldn’t make sense because they’re snacking on Canadian medicine and are thiiiis close to being placed in an old folks home. I get it.

What about the puppets? Are they pulling a Yoda?

“I haven’t heard about it,” Columbus said. “If they do monsters with CGI, I don’t know if it would be the same. They should go back and do it with puppets again, though at this point I wouldn’t be interested in being involved.”

Color me a traditionalist but seeing Gizmo pounce around in CGI is about as appealing as Phoebe Cates on her death bed in Florida. While I wouldn’t consider Gremlins a holy and untouchable film, some things are just plain awesome to me: like puppets. I love me some puppets.

What say you? Is Gremlins 3 a good idea?

I must say I am happy to hear this, while Gremlins is a cherished movie in my mind, if the original folks are involved, it can be done right and for the right reasons.

If the movie has any legs I’d be surprised.

Jimm-Tons of miveos, BIG miveos, come out without a pre-established brand and do just fine. Not to mention, this film DOES have a brand, James Cameron. They obvious don’t need to “get the word out.” The fox site CRASHED with people trying to get tickets. People are already well aware of this movie, otherwise that wouldn’t have happened. Not to mention, today everyone and their mother is discussing the release of the teaser trailer. The whole thing is an attempt for the studios to put their mind at ease. It’s like a fifth grader handing his mother his canyon drawing and asking “You like it right?”Why is the studio desperately seeking reassurance? It’s because they need it and don’t have confidence in it. Thus the “big red flag.”

Phooey with CGI! The way motion pictures are today is that some films can be weak and dumb. Gremlins, Gremlins 2: The New Batch and others movies from the past are true magic with better results. I don’t know how Gremlins 3 will pull it off like the past two movies but I hope it has the same magic.

i agree with jim. films nowadays just aren’t the same. if they can do it, and do it right, then i’m behind the idea all the way. big shoes to fill though..

i find there’s 2 kinds of CGI the same way there is 2 kinds of all visual effects. it’s either done well or it’s not done well.

They should hire Tony Gardner and those crazy folks at Alterian Studios who did the last Child’s Play movie…those puppets were hilarious. Same size too, with lots of great attitude. Dark humored fun!!!

I think that Gremlins 3 would be a great idea. I do not believe they should do a remake of the original gremlins and or do a third gremlins using CGI. It would take away from the realness of the movies. All the movies I watched as a child were very life like because they used puppets. The movie today are good, but I don't get that real feeling like I used to. I think if the makers of a gremlins 3 went about it the way they used to they would be surprised at the results. As far as not being able to use the same characters as before because they are too old is ridiculous. Zach Gilligan and Phoebe Cates are 44-45 years old. Yes is has been 19 years since the second Gremlins but come on, make up and the right clothing can make these two already young looking actors looking about 30-35 years old. You know it can be done. Just look at what they did to Michael J Fox in the 2 back to the future. I think producers and directors have lost there true talent when it comes to making movies today. They make it all about effects when it used to be about the movie itself. Things are hard enough in this economy. I think it would really help the people if they made a few sequences to old movies the way they used to make them back in the day. Just my thoughts.

Lose the CGI and 3D alright! Gremlins 3 needs the darker power of the first film (not the second film). Puppets and animatronics work well on the green monsters and of course fuzzy little Gizmo. It's a shame that Hollywood is ruining every movie classic from the 80s, 50s, 70s and 60s with 3D and CGI. I hope everything turns out okay.
