Just Go With It – Movie Review

It’s hard to fill a movie with exotically gorgeous women, but when you make your character a plastic surgeon – it’s kind of unavoidable.  Adam Sandler stars as flourishing plastic surgeon Danny Macabee.  He’s cool, down to earth and severely shattered when it comes to trusting women thanks to an ill-timed revelation from his fiance years ago.  After accidentally scoring while brandishing the barely tarnished ring, he stumbles onto its power with single women, and a playboy is born.  Jennifer Aniston portrays Katherine, his devoted medical assistant of nearly ten years.  She’s funny, grounded and keeps Danny’s life, and his practice, in order while juggling the responsibilities of being divorced with two children.  Enter Palmer portrayed by Brooklyn Decker.  She’s fresh, hot and Danny falls instantly in love and commits to truly making the relationship work.  When she finds his ‘ring of power’ a string of lies ensue as Danny attempts to convince her that the ring is a part of a divorce he’s just days away from finalizing.  The lies pull Katherine, her kids, and even Danny’s sweet cousin Eddie on a whirlwind trip to Hawaii to convince Palmer that he’s a good guy, and more importantly – a great Dad.

Is Brooklyn Decker (super model turned actress), drop dead gorgeous?  Yes.  Is Aniston, who is easily pushing 50 just as equally hot?  Yes again.  Is that Minka Kelly Sandler is hitting on in the bar?  What you won’t be able to say about this movie is that it lacks great looking women.  Even more surprising cameos are all around the Hawaiian island, both male and female, but you’ll have to look closely.  This film is easily, so much more than good looking people – it’s got heart…at least in a couple places.

Aniston is the true deliverer in this particular case.  Not being a huge fan of the show ‘Friends,’ she was never high on my list of actresses until she started playing more serious roles like 2005’s Derailed and 2002’s The Good Girl.  She brings believability in her eyes and just keeps delivering on it in each successive film.   Sandler’s character portrayals are always a visual juxtaposition for me.  He seems to always play multi-millionaire characters but in his films he is always a semi-dressed, t-shirt wearing down to earth guy – does that even exist?  He’s good for his signature quips and pithy comebacks, and yes they are funny – but I still keep seeing the same guy/Dad in him each time.  With the exception of his work in 2006’s Click, I have yet to see him stretch his acting chops – but then again when your comedic efforts all seem to top $100 million, you can understand why he sticks to his bread and butter.

The film is smartly written and not just in the joke department.  Newcomer Griffin Gluck who portrays one of Katherine’s children really works the dialogue well.  Portraying a moody, intuitive yet spacy idealist, his performance was noticeable and very solid.   Giving more credence to the scriptwriters is the character Devlin Adams.  I won’t ruin the film by telling you who the actress is that plays the role – but I will say her fire-cracker red-headed spirit was well delivered and funny as hell.  Casting Dave Matthews (the singer) as the wildy aloof husband to her was even more genius.

It’s got great laughs, a family core, and to be honest it was a downright welcome to see since its based in Hawaii and us East Coasters are snow and blizzard weary.  Take a date, get a babysitter – this one’s funny enough for the effort.

Off topic but how come you guys never have contests for passes that aren’t Gofobo? On the back of the passes I’ve gotten for The Dilemma and I Am Number Four it lists Atomic Popcorn as a sponsor.

  2. Rock Y says:

We do have other contests, and the tickets you find with our logo are co-sponsored events in which we have tickets, and frequently give them away right here on our site.

Keep checking back often, and you could get lucky.
