Personally, I enjoyed it (this is coming from a very opinionated fourteen year-old, just to let you know). It had an excellent plot that had me on the edge of my seat. Everything fit perfectly, although I did question the "alien" thing the first time I watched it. I had to look up an explanation in order to understand it. Overall, I'd give it three stars out of five. The one thing I don't understand is why everyone is getting into these fierce debates about Christianity and what-not. Guys, come on. It's just a movie. Pull yourselves together and go do something that's actually worthy of your time.

I saw the movie a fees weeks ago. But in all actuality it was partially that, and partially a Noah's Arc tale as well.If you notice the children were GIVEN the rabbits, they did not bring them. This says to me that the alien beings also wanted to preserve other forms of life as well. And the fact that there were two rabbits suggest the m/f pairing for reproduction. And in rebuttal to the people who are pissed because the movie makes the aliens out to be God... If we assume that the aliens were good enough to have omniscience, and we assume they were good enough to never be seen, would humans ever know the difference between the two? How would you describe an alien? I would describe an alien as being an entity that is from another world. Now couple that with the fact that they 1. aren't human, 2. have a pure energy-like appearance, 3. show no human emotion, 4. have technology far beyond our own. and also take into account that you're trying to explain to your kids what these beings are.The kids of these new 'Adam and Eve' -s never actually SAW these beings. They have only heard stories. Also, they don't really have a concept of what a planet is. They know what their world is, but without proof and constant reassurance all the knowledge the two original kids have will be lost with time. Especially if you consider that there is currently no method of writing things down or recording information. So the story of these beings passes down from generation to generation, until the beings that saved (or put on the earth) the new 'Adam and Eve' have become legendary, savior type entities.
If you take all this into consideration, and now restating my previous statement, would people be able to tell the difference between "God" and the aliens? Personally I find that hard to believe, and so my answer would be no. To us, a race of aliens that acted just as they did in this film would be indiscernible (through time) from "God himself". Plus they are the 'whisper people'... so they'd be able to talk to us and that, again, would be indiscernible from God. And besides that, during that age when people kill other people for heresy, wouldn't it be in your best interest to believe that the voices were from God instead of from a race of aliens that have no proof of existence? Granted neither has proof, but everyone already BELIEVES the God story, so might as well go with it right? The thing about God himself is that it's self perpetuating. So, if you believe in God, then you will see 'evidence' all the time and it's easy to continue believing. Alternatively, if you don't believe, then you never see it and thus never believe.Sorry, that last little bit was more of my views on Christianity more than the film... but there ya go. Take or leave it, those are my thoughts.

Personally I’d agree that they were trying to use Christianity throughout the film, with the Omniscience and the Garden of Eden idea and all. Most movies go the SAVE THE DAY route and I'm glad the world ended, sad depressing YES but realistic. No oil drillers into space to nuke the sun ya know. There was no saving us and so be it. Deep impact ended the world but it was way more light hearted, tidal waves we can be safe underground. I was like wait you are gonna hide in caves from a solar flare from our SUN, yeah not gonna happen, it was reassuring to hear nick cage scream later on that it would not save them.

Sorry to keep adding replies but I do have to say that I’m impressed with the ending of this movie. What I don't get is the HUGE coincedence of Koestler being there at that exact moment. AND that all the last dates of deaths on the list happened to be in his city or new york, driving distance away. Maybe I missed why the list was sort of directed toward him?

but maybe there were only 81 passengers or close to that number. I love how we pick apart a 2 hour movie but most people still take the Bible for face value without question, like it makes complete sense or something. I never once while watching thought it was angels IMO you would be sort of stupid to want them to be seen that way if you have them flying away into space and landing on other planets by spaceship. If the last scene was not in the movie (two kids on new planet, tree of knowledge), would anyone really think it was angels?

Before we start saying it’s extraterrestrials or angels maybe we should think about the fact the the symbolism might have meant that what our world believed to be the work of a GOD was in fact the work of alien life forms. Part of the plane went up in a ball of fire and then there was another fiery explosion on the other part of the plane that had broken off in the distance. Yet there were people running away from the plane. That was totally unrealistic to me. Most if not all would likely have died on impact and if somehow they survived the impact, the fire would have consumed them.

One of the parts of the movie I thought was a bit unrealistic was when the plane crashed and there were 81 fatalities. I mean .. ok you could see all those tragedies happen and may be able to save some people (most of the events had already taken place in the 50 years it was in the time capsule) ... but whats the point of warning about the end of the world when you can do nothing to prevent it or save anyone else except those who were already going to be saved ( the children) in the first place

I just watched this movie and was a little confused about what the numbers were for … I mean .. ok you could see all those tragedies happen and may be able to save some people (most of the events had already taken place in the 50 years it was in the time capsule) … but whats the point of warning about the end of the world when you can do nothing to prevent it or save anyone else except those who were already going to be saved ( the children) in the first place
