This past weekend, debut director, writer, producer and editor Oren Peli’s low-budget horror film Paranormal Activity was released in a few big cities to pretty great reviews and many unexpected sold out midnight screenings, proving that the film is playing well to its target audience: college kids and high school kids up past their bedtime.
In a unique strategic move, Paramount Pictures is expanding the release of the film in midnight shows only to cities that demand screenings via the film’s website. For now, expect the film to hit most of the big cities and then either go wide or fizzle out before a DVD release.
The hype machine is turning out to be working well for the film, which has been in the can since 2007 and stars relative unknowns. If you’re in a big city, demand to see the film at Paranormal Activity’s website and get the ball rolling on a wider release so us midwesterners can see it!
