The wonderfully neurotic Paul Giamatti will be stepping into the shoes of a tyrant — King John, in Ironclad, a medieval actioner. Jonathan English will be directing the film, with Solomon Kane himself, James Purefoy, taking the role of the hero.

Scripted by Erick Kastel and English, the drama pits a member of the formidable Knights Templar (Purefoy) and his “Magnificent Seven” cohorts who defend Rochester Castle against King John and his army in 13th century England.
Hiring Giamatti as your villain kind of preps your film for a silly atmosphere, if Shoot ‘Em Up is any indication of his performance in this film. We have a while to wait for this one — filming begins next month, with an unspecified 2010 release date.
