Maher is a very intelligent man, people tend to say he is not, but his biting humor and powerful statements show that he has studied and is very well versed in his subject. People are scared of those that challenge something that has been constant in their life. He is really saying in this film that the insanity around religion has been growing in larger numbers. The bombings, the suffering, the deaths, the wars, the fighting, a lot of it has to do with the dark side of religion. Muslims killing jews, catholics killing prostestants, christians killing muslims. You see it in the intolerance where gays are called fags and are killed for being gay. You see it when athiest are treated like satanists and peaceful wiccans are scorned like the witches of old. When times are hard, people fall back on that which they feel is a constant force, God. But they do not depend on themselves or take responsibility for their actions enough. They blame God for hating fags, when they are the ones that are cursing that gay man in the face. They blame God for hating blacks, arabs, chinese people, etc. They say God does not like them because they are not christian! Who are we to judge for God? Let God decide what to do with these people, your mission is to be a good follower and help your fellow man. Wouldnt life just be better if we just took religion lightly and spent more time helping people than killing people?
