Sweeney Todd Trailer

Well, Johnny Depp is once again dressing up like Tim Burton (see: Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow) for their latest collaboration, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon something of somewhere…” Burton + Depp usually = GOLD, but this is a musical, and I am a man , so I’m not totally sold just yet.

Weenie Todd

But wait! There’s more. It’s a musical about a psychotic barber that slices off people’s heads and then dumps their bodies into a chute where his creepy mistress (Helena Bonham Carter, looking more dead than usual) turns their bodies into meat pies and sells them to unsuspecting customers. It also co-stars Alan Rickman, and Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G, Borat and Talledega Nights). Alright, I’m sold now. Check out the trailer for yourself:

…this is also a really good musical, go see it

  2. Zaki says:

Hmmmmmmmmm that was a little…odd… but I wouldn’t pass up seeing Johnny Depp sing, since he’s one of my favorite actors since I saw Dead Man… and I love music… and Tim Burton… *will be seeing it*

  3. cody says:

its probably one of the best musicals I’ve ever seen. I’m thinking that this movie is going to be not as good as the play, but good enough so that I’ll see it in theaters.

  4. Michael says:

Should be interesting, usually like anything of Burton’s.

  5. Lauren says:

I’m not really fond of seeing Johnny Depp in a musical (but as this is a Tim Burton film, I suppose it must be mandatory), but I LOVE the musical and Alan Rickman (who doesn’t?) so I will absolutely be seeing it.

  6. Jimmy says:

    Depp + Music = FAG

  7. Leo says:

Let us not forget that the music is 100% Broadway gold, Sondheim is a living god, I can not wait

  8. Chris says:

Depp was a wanna be rockstar back in his youth…I’m looking forward to seeing him show off what he is capable of

  9. Ami says:

If I get dressed up fancy, will you take me?

  10. Gillman says:

    Only if you put out.

I’m not looking forward to this. Sweeney Todd is one of my favorite musicals, and I really appreciate Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but it’s not the right choice for this play!

    I have a list.
a] Johnny Depp’s character in this is just a mix between Jack Sparrow and Edward Scissorhands, with a little vengeance thrown in. Not ordinary men, agreed? Sweeney’s supposed to be a regular guy who you could pass on the street, bump into and move on… He wouldn’t have crazy hair or the like.

b] Mrs. Lovett is supposed to be warm and grandmotherly. Helena Bonham Carter is nonesuch character. All she’s playing is Bellatrix all over again, minus the laughter.

c] I see no reference to the plot between Johanna and Anthony. I know it’s only a preview, but that’s still a major part of the musical, and I’ll be very unhappy if I don’t see it.

d] They focus too much on the past in this. Sweeney’s supposed to be all about vengeance, not all about feeling remorse and regret about his past. Yes, there’s a little bit of that in the original, but they move on after the first couple songs.

e] The set’s all over the place! In the street, in a courtroom… I don’t know about any of you, but I loved the fact that they did so much with the show on that little set they had.

Now, I know that it will still probably be an okay movie, but it just doesn’t have the magic and thrill that the original Sweeney had. And I don’t really appreciate the fact that tons of Tim Burton fans will see this and then say they are Sweeney Todd fanatics and then raid Hot Topic for buttons with pictures of old-fashioned razors on them.
