I’ll be honest and say that if it weren’t for the fact that this show takes place in and has been/is being shot in Dallas (God Bless Texas) then I probably never would have watched a single episode. But does it really matter what draws us to a particular program? The important stuff is what keeps us watching week after week and I think The Good Guys might have just enough of that sort of stuff.

First you’ve got the pretty good pairing of a mustachioed Bradley Whitford with Colin Hanks. As Whitford’s character Dan Stark said, ”good cop, sick cop” and Hanks’ character Jack is the good cop. Whitford, known best for his 7 years on The West Wing, plays the has-been, alcoholic, womanizing, Airstream livin’, old-school cop partner to Hanks’ straight laced, career driven, detective. Yes Colin is most famous for being the son of Hollywood legend Tom Hanks and there are moments when if you close your eyes you’d believe you were listening to Tom shouting at his wild hair partner. Let’s not hold that against Colin. Guest starring as the damsel in distress Nia Vardalos claims Whitford’s heart but I wouldn’t count on seeing her again in future episodes. I am interested in seeing who else joins the fun in Big D with the cast of The Good Guys.

This show is going to be fun (not 24 kind of fun but) buddy cop, action comedy fun and that’s just what the doctor order for summer 2010. Are you going to watch?

After a significant decline in viewers this year, Fox has canceled 24. About an hour ago, producer Jon Cassar revealed on his Twitter that the show will not return for a ninth season, saying:

“News from the 24 set,the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9. Its been a great run, thans all 4 watching”

This was not very surprising. Earlier this month, Variety reported that season eight would probably be Jack’s final hurrah. However, there was hope for the series when NBC showed interest in picking up the show. That deal has apparently fallen through, presumably due to the high production costs.

I’m sad to see 24 go this way. Although the show has steadily declined ever since the near-perfect first season, I’ve always loved it. With Jack Bauer, Kiefer Sutherland has created a true American hero for our times, as well as one of the best TV characters ever. However, 24 has definitely lost its edge. The show’s premier tragically coincided with 9/11, giving the story added weight. In that first year, the story was fresh, the suspense was unbearable, and the 24-hour concept really paid off.

Unfortunately, after a couple of seasons the characters were still great but we had seen the same story already. Although still a good show, by season 5 it felt old. I kept watching, though, just to see what happened to Jack and Chloe next. The current season is nothing special. Terrorists are still doing what they do, and Jack is there to save the day. The story still has those twists that we’ve come to expect, and in the last few hours, the audience has really been thrown a few curveballs.

Yes, all good things must come to an end. I don’t want this season to be the last, though, unless it was planned that way from the beginning. The show needs a true conclusion, and I am worried that it won’t get one with this abrupt cancellation. I would love for Jack to die in the finale. It’s a fitting end. He’s already sacrificed so much protecting America from terrorists, giving his life for his country would be perfect.

In an interview with THR, showrunner Howard Gordon said, “We’ve taken a risk in the last eight episodes. It was challenging to the writers, to the actors. We’re taking a risk, the show has to do that. Without spoiling what’s to come, it’s pretty dark and complex and a place that was uncomfortable for us to write and for some of the actors to act. We really swung for the fences. Because the show is as old as it is, this season hasn’t really been given its due. But our audience is hanging in there with us and I think it’s been a very successful season.” He also said that, although the ending did not change after the news, he’s hoping that this season is a fitting ending to the series.

So, no more 24 on TV, but the movie is moving ahead as planned. Billy Ray (State of Play) is currently working on a script set in Europe. About the movie, Gordon said, “Jack is really the center of it, catching up with him emotionally and locationally where he is. The opportunity is not to use the real-time aspect and also to do it on a scale the TV show never allowed.”

I don’t think a movie suits this franchise. What set it apart was the 24-hour real-time aspect and the suspense that came from the serial format. When you put it into a film, it becomes an ordinary military thriller. But if the television writers fail us, maybe a proper finale will come in the form of the movie.

Jack Bauer has been just about everywhere and done just about everything. Everything that is, except get his own theatrical blockbuster. Well, in typical Bauer fashion, he seems poised to cross another bit of the impossible off his bucket list.

According to Variety, Fox is in talks with screenwriter Billy Ray (Shattered Glass)  to develop a script for a big budget film spinoff of  their hit show 24, which features Kiefer Sutherland as the hard-edged Bauer. Word is Ray’s treatment will feature Bauer taking on baddies somewhere in Europe.

Although Fox hasn’t yet picked up 24 for a ninth season, it appears things are progressing at the film level. And while insider information suggests that Ray has already pitched a version of the film to the studio, it’s hard for me to imagine a film in development if the show proper isn’t picked up for another season. Seemingly, what happens with the film will directly be tied to the future fate of 24 on the small screen. Despite ratings dropping 1o% in total viewers from last year, 24 is still in the top three most watched shows on the network, behind only American Idol and House.  

Whatever happens, expect a decision to be made soon regarding 24′s presence in the Fox lineup next season since current production wraps on March 24th.  I’d imagine more concrete information regarding a big-screen iteration would shortly follow it.

As far as the odds go for this happening, I certainly don’t want to be the guy betting against Jack. He usually comes through.

24 production stops due to a horrible script. What else could you expect from a show that once ruled the planet only to vomit into our living rooms once a week. 24 sucks and will continue to suck from now until they get it!

Nick Cage and his ever receding hairline is NOT dangerous at all. Bangkok Dangerous is a flop to say the least. Are you surprised?

Max Payne received an R for the ever changing MPAA and boy is John Moore pissed off. It seems the movies that need the R or NC-17 don’t get it and the ones that don’t do. MPAA is screwed up in the head if you ask me.

The worst movie of all time just got a cast and crew for its 4th and 5th installment. Check out the Spiderman 4 and 5 news over at FSR. Spiderman 3 was so bad, I don;t think I wathced more than 30 minutes of it.
