Atomic Popcorn has the privilege of offering up to you all Columbia Picture’s latest action/thriller – Salt! We will be screening the film on Tuesday, July 20th in Baltimore and we have room for 100 people! That is 50 passes for two of you.

Synopsis:

Angelina Jolie stars in Salt, a contemporary action thriller from Columbia Pictures. As a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt (Jolie) swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt’s efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: “Who Is Salt?”

Jack Bauer has been just about everywhere and done just about everything. Everything that is, except get his own theatrical blockbuster. Well, in typical Bauer fashion, he seems poised to cross another bit of the impossible off his bucket list.

According to Variety, Fox is in talks with screenwriter Billy Ray (Shattered Glass)  to develop a script for a big budget film spinoff of  their hit show 24, which features Kiefer Sutherland as the hard-edged Bauer. Word is Ray’s treatment will feature Bauer taking on baddies somewhere in Europe.

Although Fox hasn’t yet picked up 24 for a ninth season, it appears things are progressing at the film level. And while insider information suggests that Ray has already pitched a version of the film to the studio, it’s hard for me to imagine a film in development if the show proper isn’t picked up for another season. Seemingly, what happens with the film will directly be tied to the future fate of 24 on the small screen. Despite ratings dropping 1o% in total viewers from last year, 24 is still in the top three most watched shows on the network, behind only American Idol and House.  

Whatever happens, expect a decision to be made soon regarding 24′s presence in the Fox lineup next season since current production wraps on March 24th.  I’d imagine more concrete information regarding a big-screen iteration would shortly follow it.

As far as the odds go for this happening, I certainly don’t want to be the guy betting against Jack. He usually comes through.

In the last couple of years, the debate over whether ninjas or pirates would win in a battle has become increasingly heated.

Well, Hollywood’s not quite ready to settle this matter for us, but they are going to give us a different ninja battle to satisfy us for a bit.

Straight from Japan, a hotbed for low-budget, fairly absurd action films, comes a match-up for the ages, Aliens Versus Ninjas.

The film is being brought to the screen by writer-director Seiji Chiba and action director Yuji Shimomura, and will tell the tale of a band of ninjas who go into the forest to identify a fireball they saw fall from the sky. Upon approaching the fireball, they discover beastly aliens who immediately eat several of the ninjas.

Demonstrating true honor, the surviving ninjas vow to avenge the deaths of their comrades, only to discover that all of their weapons are useless against the alien invaders.

Aliens Versus Ninjas is said to be rife with blood, action, and ninjas–basically everything one can hope for from this type of movie.

No I am not at Comic Con, although next year we will be there in full force to cover what could be a fun summer vacation!

Anyway I have some news to hand out from some goons I work with! Below is the press release from Summit Entertainment from Comic Con.

Los Angeles, CA July 15, 2008 – On Thursday, July 24^th, 2008 Summit Entertainment will showcase cast members, filmmakers and new footage from its upcoming films during Comic-Con 2008 for the first time in the studio’s history. Summit Entertainment will present a sneak peak of exclusive footage from its upcoming releases including PUSH, KNOWING and the action-packed, modern day vampire love story, TWILIGHT. The studio’s panel presentation will take place at 1:15 to 2:45pm in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center.

The details of the panel will be as follows:

PUSH – Chris Evans (Nick), Dakota Fanning (Cassie), Djimon Hounsou (Carver), Camilla Belle (Kira) and director Paul McGuigan (LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN) will present a first look at exclusive footage and answer questions about the film. In this futuristic sci-fi thriller set in Hong Kong, a group of young American ex-pats with extraordinary psychic abilities must band together and use their different talents on a final mission to escape a clandestine government agency forever.

KNOWING – Director Alex Proyas (I, ROBOT) will appear in person to introduce never-before-seen footage from his new major motion picture starring Nicolas Cage (Ted Myles). In this gripping action thriller of global proportion, a professor stumbles on terrifying predictions about the future–and sets out to prevent them from coming true.

TWILIGHT – Director Catherine Hardwicke (THIRTEEN, LORDS OF DOGTOWN), book series author Stephenie Meyer and the cast including Robert Pattinson (Edward), Kristen Stewart (Bella), Cam Gigandet (James), Rachelle Lafevre (Victoria), Edi Gathegi (Laurent), Taylor Lautner (Jacob) will answer questions about bringing these characters to life on the big screen as well as showing exclusive footage from the film.

Additionally, visitors to the Summit Entertainment booth located within the Grand Hall will have the opportunity to have their picture taken with life size standees of Twilight’s Edward, Bella, James, Laurent or Victoria and instantly e-mail the images to friends. At the booth, attendees will also have the chance to win one of thousands of exclusive and limited Comic-Con promotional prizes including TWILIGHT items and advance DVDs of NEVER BACK DOWN. Back at Comic-Con’s designated autographing room, lucky winners will have the opportunity to participate in a limited autograph session with the panelists from PUSH, KNOWING and TWILIGHT.

I am actually a little excited to see “Twilight”, although I want to read the novel prior to seeing the film.

IGN has the first look at Vin Diesel’s new movie, Babylon A.D. Babylon AD trailer

Opening August 29, the Mathieu Kassovitz-directed sci-fi action-thriller co-stars Gérard Depardieu, Michelle Yeoh, Charlotte Rampling, Mark Strong, Radek Bruna, Melanie Thierry and Lambert Wilson.

In the film, a veteran-turned-mercenary (Vin Diesel) agrees to escort a woman from Russia to Germany, not realizing that she’s the host for an organism that a cult wants to harvest into a genetically-modified Messiah.

Apple has just released a HD trailer for the sci-fi action thriller Jumper. Its being directed by Doug Liman, who has brought us Bourne Identity and Mr and Mrs Smith. I think it may be enjoyable. Possibly a theater see, but most likely a rental.
