As Avatar makes it way to sinking Titanic, the brains behind 20th Century Fox have made a very bold move in the eyes of all the fans everywhere. They just posted up the Avatar screenplay! The original paper thoughts of Pandora before there was Pandora!

Only 17 days after its premiere, Avatar will place itself among the most successful films in history by becoming only the fifth film ever to make $ 1 billion in worldwide box office sales.

Let’s put this in perspective: it took The Dark Knight 231 days to pass the coveted $1 billion mark back in 2008 and James Cameron’s other blockbuster Titanic, 44 days. Now, barely halfway into its second week, Cameron’s Avatar needs roughly $352.1 million domestically to glide across that finish line.

While Avatar was admittedly never intended to be a box office topper, it is currently doing so in Russia and is actually the best selling Hollywood movie ever in France, India and South Korea!

In this week’s Entertainment Weekly, the magazine tried to uncover the secret of the film’s success, since it had no franchise to build off of like most of its predecessors. According to Box Office Mojo, the fifth most successful film was The Dark Knight, then Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. In fact, the only movie to reach $1 billion outside a franchise was Cameron’s Titanic, the most successful movie of all time.

EW concluded the success lay in the glasses. Not only do some theaters charge up to $18.50 for IMAX tickets, but the buzz created by the new technology could be the cause for sold-out screenings.

Cameron is $800 million away from breaking his own box office record. So what if 75% of Avatar’s total worldwide gross was from the more expensive 3-D or IMAX tickets? Avatar may just become the highest grossing film, ever! If not it will certainly continue to break all kinds of other records, like the best gross ever for a film in its third fourth fifth weekend !

Holy what the what.  James Cameron’s Avatar, everyone’s favorite massive-behemoth-with-an-enormous-marketing-push-that-could, has just crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office as of this weekend.  This is remarkable for many reasons.  First, it makes Cameron the first filmmaker EVER to have not one, but TWO $1 billion-grossers in his career.  Let alone back-to-back $1 billion-grossers.  Of course, it remains to be seen if this film can actually surpass Titanic‘s domestic and international benchmarks, but let’s just say I, for one, wouldn’t bet against the King of the World

According to a recent press release by the IMAX Corporation, the company’s current draw, Avatar, is absolutely shattering IMAX box office records.

In just ten days, the film has already taken in $39 million worldwide, making $8.8 million domestically and $3.6 million internationally in its second weekend. The $8.8 million from IMAX showings counts for about 12 percent of Avatar‘s domestic gross, despite IMAX theaters making up less than 3 percent of the screens playing the movie.

Although IMAX theaters make up a small portion of the total screens showing Avatar, 17 of the top 20 locations showing the film in the U.S. were IMAX theaters.

Internationally, IMAX theaters in both Poland and Japan saw record openings, and Avatar is still set to open on 11 IMAX screens in China, which will likely also see record breaking numbers.

Greg Foster, the Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, credits the overwhelming success of Avatar with the style of the movie, which is perfectly suited for the IMAX experience. “To have reached $39 million from 249 screens in just 10 days demonstrates that moviegoers clearly understand the value of experiencing Avatar in IMAX,” said Foster.

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond echoes this, saying that the weekend’s box office results show that moviegoers are clearly favoring IMAX as the way to see Avatar, and believes that “Avatar is well on its way to becoming our highest grossing Hollywood IMAX title.”

While 20th Century Fox may have cleaned up as far as international sales went in 2009, it was Warner Bros. that swept the competition domestically.

Despite starting the year off with several films that saw lukewarm success–Watchmen, Observe and Report, Terminator:Salvation–the summer’s big hits of The Hangover and the most recent Harry Potter both brought in around $300 million domestically.

More recent openings for the studio have also done well, with The Blind Side being one of the top ten highest grossing films of 2009, and Sherlock Holmes bringing in $65 million in its opening weekend.

All of this has helped Warner Bros. to make over $2 billion this year, crushing its own record of $1.8 billion in a year. The studio’s success in 2008 was due largely to the very well-received The Dark Knight, which helped to make Warner Bros. the most profitable studio. Obviously, such an increase in sales in the past year has cemented that title for the studio for a second year.

Will 2010 bring the same success for Warner Bros.? Considering that the later part of the year will see the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I, it’s definitely possible.

2009 was a pretty good year for 20th Century Fox, and the release of Avatar in the final weeks of the year gave the studio an extra boost in profits. While Fox did well domestically, it was overseas that they really knocked out the competition.

Thanks partially to the $405 million brought in internationally by Avatar, 20th Century Fox set a new record in foreign box office sales. Fox earned $2.26 billion from theaters around the world, beating the previous international box office record of $2.24 billion (seen by Warner Bros. in 2007).

While Avatar‘s release may have given Fox the final push towards its record-breaking year, the studio’s big winner internationally was the summer’s animated hit Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. The third film in the Ice Age franchise saw a cumulative of $687.2 million at foreign theaters, making it one of the industry’s top 3 highest international grossers of all time (Titanic comes in at number 1, The Return of the King at number 2).

Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Avatar may have been the big hits leading Fox’s way to their international success of the year, but Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel has held its own to give 20th Century Fox an added buffer at foreign box offices. The live-action/animation mix has so far brought in $133.6 million internationally, and is still scheduled to open in 25 more areas.

Apparently the U.S. isn’t the only country to have been stricken with New Moon fever.

While the $118 million the film brought in overseas may have not quite met the amount domestic gross of $140.7 million for its first weekend, it was still enough to make New Moon the number one film at box offices worldwide.

New Moon, which crushed the former records for best midnight screening/opening day/opening weekend in the U.S., also set opening records in both Australia and New Zealand.

The film was opened on 6,681 screens in 25 territories, earning about $17,677 per screen.

In the entirety of its theatrical run, Twilight itself took in $384 million. With a worldwide gross of $258.8 million in just its opening weekend, it looks like New Moon will easily surpass the earnings of the movie that set the stage for the vampire-human girl-werewolf love triangle to unfold.

Well, the vampires did it. After crushing the box office record for biggest draw for a midnight release, New Moon has officially broken the record for best opening day sales.

The film’s first day in theaters grossed $72.7 million at 4,024 theaters, easily passing up the amount brought in by former holder of the “best opening day” title, The Dark Knight. That film saw $67.2 million, and was released in three hundred more theaters than New Moon.

New Moon‘s opening not only beat out Dark Knight‘s record, but also trounced the opening numbers of its own predecessor. Twilight earned only $36 million in its first day, meaning that the franchise has seen a more than 100% gain with the second film of the saga.

The numbers for the flick suggest that New Moon has managed to draw in an audience far beyond its core fan base, even if that expansion includes people who only saw the movie to see what the hype’s about — or disgruntled boyfriends who were dragged to the theater by their girlfriends.

Warner Bros. Studios played off the fact that New Moon has a specific target audience, and opened The Blind Side on the same day, hoping to appeal to those wanting to hit the theater, but not interested in the vampire film. However, the Blind Side ended up only bringing in a modest $10.9 million.

Rather than fading, the Twilight phenomena seems to just continue to thrive, thanks largely to a very strong fan audience. If the interest in all things Twilight keeps on the way it is, we could very well see the release of the third installment beat the franchise’s own record yet again.
