On Friday night, Bleeding Cool reported that Nemesis, a comic-book written by Mark Millar with art by Steve McNiven, is headed to the big screen as 20th Century Fox optioned the property and Tony Scott set to direct.

The idea behind Nemesis is ‘What if Bruce Wayne became a bad guy?’ In the comic, the very Batman-inspired character is the country’s only super-villain who uses his training and high-tech gadgetry to systematically hunt down cops.

Millar is a prolific comic-book writer, having worked on the X-Men, Civil War, The Ultimates, and many others before focusing on his own creator-owned books like Kick-Ass and Wanted. He has been criticized for only thinking about how his comics can be turned into movies, and I can’t judge his intentions, but it seems to be working.

Tony Scott, younger brother of Ridley, has had a long and successful, albeit not always critically-acclaimed career. He has directed Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop 2, True Romance, Enemy of the State and more recently worked with Denzel Washington on Man on Fire, Déjà Vu, and The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. His next film, Unstoppable hits theaters November 12th.

While Nemesis is a neat idea, a film adaptation doesn’t really sound all that interesting. The comic presents some interesting imagery, so that may be good to see on the big screen, but are a simple character study and some cool images enough to hold up an entire film? And Tony Scott directing doesn’t get me as excited as it does Millar. He can direct action, but I don’t see him bringing anything new to the movie to really make it stand out. Anyway, its still very early in development so we’ll have to wait and see.

In the last week, a barrage of images have hit the web from the various comic-book adaptations on the way. Starting with the Green Lantern reveal, which we already featured, we’ve seen new images from Thor as well as Captain America: The First Avenger. So what do you think? I am still really excited for Thor, but the images of the gods are a little worrying. I am not going to pass judgement before I see a trailer, but they look very silly right now. I’m really liking the Captain America images, though. I love how the film is set during World War II. Seeing Cap fight the Nazis is going to be awesome. As for Green Lantern, I am looking forward to seeing a traditional superhero origin story. What I mean by that is it’s looking like DC is going back to the basics – they’re not trying anything special with GL as far as I can tell. Hopefully, it’ll just be a fun superhero flick.

There’s sure to be a ton of superhero film news headed your way in the next week thanks to that little geek gathering over in San Diego, so prepare yourself.

Well there it is. Ryan Reynolds in all his green glory. What do you think? Does this get you more pumped for the movie? Are you a little underwhelmed?

I was very intrigued when I heard that Green Lantern’s suit would be completely digital. It makes sense, really, as the costume is only a manifestation of the ring’s power. I was hoping that we would see something really magical – a sort of ethereal, pulsating mass of energy surrounding our hero. I guess that’s kind of what it looks like, but I was looking for something even crazier. I like the lines of energy that seem to be moving but other than that it looks like an ordinary superhero costume. Maybe using CGI was only the filmmakers excuse to get away with a cliche spandex costume. Maybe my expectation were too high. It looks good, but I was looking for something truly unique, and that’s not what this is.

In any case, Green Lantern is one of my favorite heroes and I still can’t wait to see him on the big screen next June 17th.

This is the trailer for the movie I’ll be seeing October 15, 2010 (US theatrical release date) because HOLY MOLY it looks good. Red is based on Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s comic book limited series written in 2003 of the same name. This film adaptation was directed by Robert Schwentke (Time Traveler’s Wife, Flightplan) and stars Bruce Willis (Lucky Number Slevin), Morgan Freeman (Lucky Number Slevin), Helen Mirren (Gosford Park) and John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich). Also appearing in the film are Mary-Louis Parker (Weeds), Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws), Brian Cox (Rushmore), Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck) and Ernest Borgnine (The Dirty Dozen). If that cast isn’t reason enough for you to be chomping at the bit to see this comedic comic book adaptation then the trailer will certainly do the job, enjoy-

Earlier this month, IESB reported that the geek legend was the front-runner for the job (and that was later confirmed), but now, according to Deadline, Marvel Studios is in final negotiations for Joss Whedon to direct The Avengers.

This is very surprising, considering Whedon’s previous work. While he’s proven to be a very talented writer and become extremely popular in the geek realm, let’s just say Mr. Whedon has never been a commercially viable filmmaker. However, his credits are extensive and consistently solid. His work has included Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Toy Story (for which he won an Oscar), Alien Resurrection, Titan A.E., and Speed, as well as a very successful run penning The Astonishing X-Men comic book. Clearly, he is a great writer, but his directorial talents have yet to be thoroughly tested. The only feature film he has directed was Serenity, based on his own show.

Marvel is proving to be very ahead of the game when it comes to movies. First they go independent, so they can make their films the way they, and the fans, want. Then they hire a team of writers to brainstorm full-time on their properties. Now, the company has enough faith to give Whedon their most important upcoming movie. The studio is putting everything they have into this franchise, and a success could have huge consequences for the comic-book movie genre.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what he does with the film. The Avengers is shaping up to be the ultimate geek event of the decade. I mean, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and The Hulk in the same movie! Amazing. Cinematical’s Erik Davis sums it up quite nicely:

“If you’re 16 and read a lot of comics, then this film could be the equivalent of losing your virginity to a Playboy model on top of a champagne waterfall.”

A comic book movie can really make waves in the movie industry or it can sink faster than the Titanic, with that said, Green lantern is a sure win in my eyes.  I have a feelin about this one.

According to Pete over at /Film, an exclusive for Pete, the news of Green Lantern’s suit comes flying onto your screen. Is Ryan Reynolds going to be naked on screen? Well not on our screen but on the green screen, yes, yes he is. According to /Film’s exclusive – Reynolds will be wearing a CGI suit for the film.

While we have seen this type of thing before, Iron Man, The Hulk etc, is this the right move for such a simple and stylish suit? Will CG look CG? I am a firm believer of immersing ones self into the movie, if anything is off or can be called out as “fake” it could ruin the flow of the entire film. If we are to see the Green Lantern in a suit that is fabricated by the world’s best computers, will we be able to tell?

A few days ago, Latino Review’s El Mayimbe suspected that Harrison Ford would be joining Cowboys & Aliens. That rumor has now been confirmed.

Cowboys & Aliens is Iron Man director Jon Favreau’s next project. The movie is based on a graphic novel series in which aliens attempt to conquer the Wild West. Cowboys and Apache Indians must put aside their differences in order to defend earth. You can read the first issue here.

The movie is moving forward based on a script by Star Trek scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and Lost co-creator Damon Lindelhof. The current cast includes Daniel Craig in the lead, Zeke Jackson, and Olivia Wilde as Ella.

Earlier today, Favreau confirmed the rumor, saying:

Please stop asking if Harrison Ford is in Cowboys & Aliens. Okay? He is. Please don’t tell anybody.

Harrison Ford is my all-time favorite actor. Han Solo and Indiana Jones are among the greatest characters in all of movies. That being said, his recent roles haven’t had the same effect. Hopefully, C&A can give Ford another gritty hero to play and, although the actor is quickly approaching his 70th birthday, I think he still has a lot more in him.

Iron Man 2 is easily one of the most-anticipated movies of this summer, and there has been a lot of hype around the movie. We’ve waded through dozens of redundant image sets to bring you 50 high-resolution images from the film.
