For the second weekend in a row the Sony Pictures Animation hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs reigns at the top of the box office. Making up about 24.6 million during this September weekend, the children’s book turned feature edged its way past the competition. Facing three first week opening films, the audiences agreed that they preferred mountains of raining ice cream over horror, music and robots.

Falling onto a hard second place is the Bruce Willis science fiction film Surrogates. Suffering from mixed reviews and a strange yet some what confusing alternative present plot, not everyone flocked to the screenings. Taking in only 15 million, the eighty million dollar budget film has a long way to go until it reaches its goal. The same does not go for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer remake of the 1980′s classic Fame. The modernized tale of a group of kids who go through a New York City school of performing arts took in 10 million, a reasonable profit for a low budget film.

The last of the newest releases is the science fiction thriller Pandorum which could not capture the attention of audiences when it brought in 4.4 million. The forty million dollar budget film, produced by Resident Evil series director Paul W.S. Anderson, failed to woo over critics and movie-goers alike.

Honorable mention goes to Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds which continues breaking the popular director’s box office total for a single film. The World War II fictional tale has a total so far of 114.4 million and still going strong. Here’s the rest of the totals below:

The newest set of recent releases are the Drew Barrymore directed film Whip It, the horror comedy Zombieland, Ricky Gervais’ The Invention of Lying and the Coen brothers’ film A Serious Man.

Musical/dance director Kevin Tancharoen, whose remake of Fame will hit theaters on September 25th, has been talking about a sci-fi action project entitled Arcana that he wants to direct.

“Arcana is a unique blend of the graphic-novel backdrop – like Blade Runner – and shot like 300, and has a little bit of Warriors mixed in there, with a little bit of martial arts, so it’s got a lot of crazy elements in there,” said Tancharoen, pretty much appealing to every 13 year old boy in existence.

While the names dropped within Tancharoen’s quote —  Blade Runner, 300, The Warriors — are a dime a dozen, one name stands out in this equation: Brett Ratner, director of X-Men: The Last Stand. He’s producing the film, which is currently being crafted by Red Tails’ writer John Ridley.

I’m equal parts skeptical and intrigued by this project. While I’m a fan of any newcomer to the sci-fi genre — this year has seen the arrival of two masters in the form of Duncan Jones and Neill Blomkamp — the players in this project seem ill-fitted to produce something that stands alongside any of their inspiration. I say seem because we haven’t seen what Tancharoen and Ridley are truly capable of.

Ratner, however?

Newcomer Kevin Tancharoen directs the 1980 remake from United Artists, MGM and Lakeshore Entertainment. The story revolves around an updated version of the 1980 musical, which centered on the students of the New York Academy of Performing Arts (IMDB). Expected to burst out musically onto the scene on September 25th, this full trailer gives us a better taste of what is to come. Granted, it does not have the same sort of feel as the original, it still obviously is trying to be its absolutely talented best.

Fame Teaser

Fame, a 1980′s Oscar winning film for Best Score and Best Song, has been remade with the eye of budding director Kevin Tancharoen. Featuring upcoming stars Kay Panabaker (CSI), Cody Longo (Medium), Naturi Naughton (Notorious), Fame centers around students attending the New York Academy of the Performing Arts. Dancing its way into theatres on September 25th, here’s the first teaser trailer for the upcoming remake.

I would probably assume that this movie is just an addition to the films rather than anything new, but it seems to me its a cross between Transporter 2 and Crank. What do you think??

Sean William Scott and Paul Rudd star in this over the top comedy about two salesman that have to server either 30 days in jail or do community service with kids. It seems like the 30 days in jail may of left them better off.

Role Models looks to be the runner up for Comedy of the Year right behind the outrageous and over the top Tropic Thunder. The movie stars other up and coming stars such as “McLovin” from Superbad fame, along with the ever beautiful Elizabeth Banks.
