Blu-ray is such an awesome technology and really is now just gaining some legs with the release of LOTR. Recently IGN spoke to one of the Lucasfilm Directors, Steve Sansweet and he confirmed that the Star Wars films will soon be coming to Blu-ray. While this is not a surprise to most of us, someone inside the compound saying it is nice to hear.

“We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won’t call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material. We’re finding all kinds of scenes from dailies that have never been seen before. Beyond all of those things that you know about… there are some real treasures.”

When will the set come out? Sansweet says, “We’re not ready to announce exactly when it’s coming out, but it won’t be in the too distant future.”

Steve Sansweet also spoke to IGN about plans to re-release the Star Wars films in 3D:

“George has publicly expressed an interest in doing Star Wars 3D. Right now there are a number of different technologies, there’s some criticism out there about some of the movies that have quickly changed to 3D, so you have to pick the right technology, you have to get it to a cost that makes sense, and you have to have the time of the director and producer — George — to actually go in there, because you can’t push a button and stuff goes in one end and comes out 3D…

“Saying all that, George remains very interested in doing the Star Wars movies, all six, in 3D, and I hope it will happen someday in the not too distant future.”

So what say you? Are you excited that the force will be strong amongst those with Blu? Let us know your thoughts below.

Spielberg, Ford and Lucas are getting ready for Indy 5!

Movie News

fifth Indy movie underway

George Lucas

Harrison Ford

Indiana Jones 5

Indy 5 story

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Shia LaBeouf

Steven Spielberg
<guid

Indy 5 is moving forward, albeit slowly.

Forget the fact that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull faced almost immediate fan backlash, or that Lucas and Spielberg haven’t exactly been wowing the masses with their recent attempts at blockbuster adventure. None of it seems to matter, because it looks like all three of the names needed to get this thing off the ground are approaching agreement.

Harrison Ford was talking to the BBC recently and he confirmed what Shia LeBeouf was muttering over the summer; the trio have an basic story idea for the fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise. From Ford’s mouth, this is what they have got: “Steven [Spielberg] and George [Lucas] and I are sort of agreed on a germ of an idea and we’re seeing what comes of it.” There’s no scriptwriter in place as of yet, and literally nothing formal has transpired. From Harrison’s elaboration it looks like the ball is in George’s court for now:

“The process works like this… We come to some basic agreement and then George goes away for a long time and works on it. Then Steven and I get it in some form, some embryonic form. Then if we like it we start working with George on it and at some point down the line it’s ready and we do it.”

Considering how long it took to get Indy 4 moving, this news hardly means we will see another Indy anytime soon. Then again, there’s definitely a sell-by date for this franchise and its leading man–a date many think has long since passed– and Lucas can’t sit on this one all that long unless he’s gonna make Shia the star. At which point, the fans may actually stage a rebel assault on Skywalker Ranch.

Funny, though. What exactly is the creative process for Lucas pulling together a story? I get the feeling he writes the whole thing down breathlessly in crayon while he’s on the can, finishes it in twenty minutes, and then drops it in a desk drawer until Ford and Steven are desperate enough to settle for anything.

I’m not a hater of the fourth Indy movie, but to this day I have trouble remembering exactly what happened in it. There were a few good scenes, some worthwhile moments, but ultimately it felt out-of-practice and lazy and most of that blame goes to Spielberg and Lucas, who never seemed to defer to anybody else in regards to their over-the-top insane ideas, including Indy’s survival of a nuclear explosion by hiding in a refrigerator.

What do you fine people think about this? Would a fifth Indiana Jones be worth any-body’s time? After making box office bank with the last entry, what’s Lucas’ incentive for making a stronger product?

Probably doesn’t matter, because it’s far too early to suppose much. I will make this forecast: I bet we get an update announcing the film will be in 3-D long before we get an announcement regarding a screenwriter.

<br

I can hear your mouse clicking away from this page, but wait! You’re obviously a fan of the first TRON (or like me you can’t imagine how you haven’t seen the first and are hoping Hulu, Netflix or Blockbuster will come through before December 17th, 2010). Okay, so I’m going to watch the original much sooner than the release date of TRON: LEGACY but you get my point — I was wrong in not seeing TRON. It has been on my list for some time but it hasn’t been on any of my movie channels to DVR (sorry Disney Channel, I won’t DVR a movie with commercials) then I see the images and teaser trailer for TRON: LEGACY and I’m hooked! Jeff Bridges? yes, please! A futuristic landscape that would make George Lucas and Stanley Kubrick proud? um, hell yeah! So there you have it I’ve confessed, repented and am now going to obey — I’m seeing TRON tonight! Please share with me your thoughts on the original and now the sequel, and whether I’m right in thinking Lucas or Kubrick would appreciate TRON.

Indiana Jones 5 in Early Development

Featured

Movie News

crystal skull

George Lucas

Harrison Ford

Indiana Jones 5 in Early Development

Steven Spielberg
<guid

While not a great film or a very good film, I feel it’s redeemed by a wonderful return by Harrison Ford’s screen presence, and it captures the original spirit of the series quite well for much of its running time.

That said, even after acknowledging that Indiana Jones is my favorite screen character of all time, I can’t see much of a point in continuing the series after the conclusion that was reached in Crystal Skull. According to Ford, however, I should start getting excited:

“The story for the new ‘Indiana Jones’ is in the process of taking form,” Ford explained. “Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I’ll be very happy to put the costume on again.”

While this hardly means anything in the grand scheme of things (the development of the fourth film was a debacle), the last entry gained close to a billion dollars in revenue. It’s hard not to see the studio logic behind this one.

<div
