Were you watching? AMC’s Mad Men premiere picked up just where we left off at the end of last season. Well, not exactly. A year has passed, it’s now 1964 and the monumental changes that occurred last season, notably Don’s divorce from Betty and Sterling Cooper, have had time to mature.

Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce is no longer officing out of a suite at the Pierre Hotel, now they are located at The Time & Life Building on 6th Avenue. Parts of “Public Relations” felt a little too ________. There were too many winks, felt like a leer. The grand introduction to the 6th Avenue offices with a musical score straight out of 2003′s Down With Love was pushing it. A bit. The repeatedly vocalized Don Draper love caused me to question my own crush on the man character, after all no one wants to be told that they’re head over heels for someone. Thankfully Don’s imperfections, like rough sex with a whore, remind us that he’s no Prince Charming (though he is quite charming). More on Don later.

Later. Peggy still doesn’t have Don’s respect and her shenanigans in tonight’s episode didn’t help her cause. I hope that Peggy’s ”methods” aren’t a sign of the times, those darned ’60s, PR stunts are just plain sneaky. If you’re going to sell me something I apparently don’t already want at least have the decency to do so in a traditional advertising medium. By the way I think I’ve come to the conclusion that BMW is the ultimate driving machine, has anyone else ever felt this way? Where was I? The divorce! Betty did in fact marry Henry Francis in Reno and now they have a blended family. Honestly when Betty and Henry started gettin’ busy in the car, in the garage, I sorta hoped they’d forget they had the engine running (HA!) and maybe peacefully fall into that eternal sleep because I don’t really care for either character. Does that make me cruel? Do you like Betty or Mr. Francis? If so, what am I missing? Meanwhile Sally Draper reprises her role as Problem Child. You know who I’m glad to see again? Joan and Roger, those two are just swell.

Then there’s this Don character, don’t know about him. Read an article about him in Advertising Age and he sure seemed like a prick. Seriously unless I’m completely out of the loop I’m going to side with Don on the missed opportunity with the Ad Age interview- the interview should have been with The Wall Street Journal from the start. After all we know that Don had a great year (don’t you wanna see this television commercial he created?). I call that fake drama and it did not get me through the episode. We have felt the threat of Don’s secret life much greater in past episodes and really does anyone think Richard Whitman could hurt Don now?

Would someone explain to me the second floor? Was it all just a boob joke?

The Nashville Teens’ Tobacco Road carried us into the closing credits, might have to visit iTunes…

So did I like “Public Relations?” Yes. I know this because I wasn’t ready for the episode to end. Were you?

A few quotes to get us through the week-

“A wooden leg, they’re so cheap they can’t even afford a whole reporter.”

“You have a great bikini, I’ve spent some time with the catalog and I would say ‘no concerns at all.’”

“Do you want women who want bikinis to buy your two piece or do you just want to make sure women who want a two piece don’t suddenly buy a bikini?”

“So how are your balls, you enjoying yourself?”

“wet fart”

“I learned a valuable lesson, stay away from one-legged reporters.”

“jai alia”<br

Let’s be clear: I don’t believe Community has jumped the shark yet. Yet. When they do, they will most likely put laser beams on said shark in an episode devoted to Bond, James Bond.

Side note: I am sick and tired of hearing Gene Wilder’s beautiful song “Pure Imagination” (from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) in that AT&T commercial only because the song is not available for purchase on iTunes and I have forgotten where you buy compact discs.

<a

I think they went a little overboard in their direct attacks of the popular (how often can you say this?) FOX sitcom but Community has never been one to pull any punches. It is funny to think that most of the Glee students will probably end up at community college…

Oh yeah, JEFF AND BRITTA DID IT! TOGETHER!

And now let’s discuss “ESL” also known as the episode with lots of Chang. Ken Jeong has been on a hot streak over the past couple of years, mostly in film, but I think he’s found his perfect fit on Community as Señor Ben Chang the Asian Spanish professor. No one was surprised when Chang revealed that he had no college degree as well as only a Sesame Street understanding of the Spanish language but that story line was the only interesting or entertaining story line of the episode. And really I’m talkin’ about the scenes between Jeff and Chang. Troy’s Good Will Hunting plumbing skillz was lame. Annie’s involvement in Señor Chang’s outing was bland. Dr. not Señor Chang was a wasted cameo opportunity (though it did give Pierce a chance to show how much he cares for the study group), which reminds me, where has John Michael Higgins been? Can we start an online petition? Or get some of those Chuck fans to do something at a Subway?

More Glee/Community talk: can we get Sue Sylvester and Señor Chang to meet?

“And now crickets”

Modern Family: “Hawaii” 5/12/2010

TV Recaps

abc

Ed O'Neill

Eye of the Tiger

Full House

itunes

Lewis and Clark

Louisiana Purchase

Modern Family

Olsen Twins

Phil Dunphy

The Beach Boys

Ty Burrell
<guid

This episode made me smile and that’s all I ask.

The first laughs came when Manny and Luke expressed very different reactions to having their own hotel room. Manny looking through the closet, “Score! There’s an iron in here!” Luke with his shirt off, hair dryer in hand and a shower cap over his head, “I am a bathroom martian. beep. boop. boop. I’m from the nebula of the great toilet. beep. boop. beep. boop. bop.” Hotel rooms really are fun no matter how old you are and this scene captured that feeling.

<a

This is as good a time as any — PHIL QUOTES!

“So I was thinking we book a couple’s massage! I accidentally looked in on one. They seemed really relaxed until they noticed me.”

“Just to be clear, I’m not condoning eating your kids, but I sure as heck know why giraffes do it.”

“I’m just going to rock you. Like a hurricane. I’m kidding. You’re too old to get that.” I am not to old to get that and I thank you, Phil Dunphy, for being the light of my Wednesday night.

O’Neill’s Jay recalling his father’s last moments on this earth, “He did die doin’ what he loved: refusing service to hippies who came into his store.” I would have liked Jay’s dad. In an episode where Ed O’Neill struggles with the thought of his own mortality I am especially thankful for the scene between O’Neill and Burrell. You know the one. In the hammock.

“I just ordered an extra-long straw to avoid accidentally doin’ a sit-up.” If I liked using straws I’d definitely follow O’Neill’s lead. To Gloria’s (that’s everyone) I may never quote Gloria because without her accent it’s just not the same. By the way: her accent, real or fake?

What did we learn about Cameron this week? Cameron likes adventure but not as much as Mitchell thought! This of course means that he is in fact a “stay-by-the-pool type of guy” also “Sidenote- we’re very good friends with a couple named Lewis and Clark. Clark bought a big, sparkly belt in New Orleans that he calls his ‘Louisiana Purchase.’”

Lily is the cutest prop ever. Since we’ve already touched on the Full House connection- do you think that Modern Family will be on the air long enough for us to see Lily grow up, ala the Olsen twins?

No one thought Luke would ever find a use for that iron Manny found but, “I had bread, I had cheese, and I had an iron. No, I’m not foolish enough to think that Olivia’s niece Ella wasn’t already in for a less-than-normal childhood but when you’ve got an “uncle” like Walter you’re destined for impossibilities. Here are just a few impossibilities that I imagined thanks to “Brown Betty:”

1st impossibility: iTunes’ Genius would definitely recommend an album containing the musical stylings of Bishop & Broyles, and I would buy said album.

2nd impossibility: Ella might prefer that Walter read Dr. Seuss next time she asks for a story but I’m okay with Walter’s Dark City-style noir sci-fi mashup.

3rd impossibility: Olivia can’t sing. I think this was always a possibility and I’m not truly sure what it means that I’m calling this fact an “impossibility” but this is Fringe and I’ll defer your questions to Walter.

4th impossibility: Who did Walter say invented hugs? The Candy Man? or was it Walter himself? Either way that’s news to me, I always figured the Care Bears were responsible for hugs, rainbows and cotton candy.

And now I leave you with some quotes from “Brown Betty.”

“I’ve decided that we need to get organized,” So I’ve got a new addition to my house cleaning soundtrack: “Roundabout” by Yes.

“It’s a hybrid of Chronic Supernova and Afghani Coosh — I call it Brown Betty.”

“I couldn’t possibly look after anyone else, I’m well into phase one.” Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels” reminded me of the greatness, Donnie Darko. What would Walter have had to say about Frank the rabbit?

“Gene — Gene, no licking!” Just because…

“What kind of doctor are you?” Good question.

What are some of your questions for Mr. Abrams and the Fringe universe?

Proposed Price Cuts on iTunes TV shows

TV News

CBS

itunes

Price Cuts

Tv
<guid

They worry further involvement in downloading ventures could cannibalize existing revenues from syndication and DVD sales.

NBC Universal took its programming off back in 2008 in an effort to earn more through iTunes. They succeeded in obtaining a raise of the price ceiling from $1.99 to $ 2.99 an episode. However, the new strategy proposed by CBS has pricing headed in the opposite direction.

“There are certain shows that will be sold on Apple for 99 cents,” Moonves said during the company’s earnings call on Friday. The details on which shows the network would be providing at these lower prices were not discussed.

It is possible CBS is not planning a completely game-changing stance on iTunes downloading. Like other major networks, CBS already offers older programming and new shows it is promoting at discount prices.

However, going on the context of Moonves’s comments, it is clear CBS is planning its pricing structure on more than a one-off basis.

“Rain of Madness” Available On iTunes

Movie News

ben stiller

comedy

documentary

films

itunes

jack black

Movie

paramount

producers

Rain of Madness

real

Robert Downey Jr

theaters

Wanted
<guid

The fake documentary focuses on the real movie’s fake director, and what happens to the fake cast before they go into the real jungle. It’s pretty straightforward”, says <span

Yeah, that Joss Whedon…the guy that gave Buffy the Vampire Slayer a life and let us join in on the fun times the crew of the Firefly were having. Now Joss has gone back and made a musical unlike any other musical ever created. Yes, you heard me correctly….JOSS WHEDON MADE A MUSICAL. I know that a few of you are now muttering to yourself that I have no clue that Joss had done a musical prior to this as an episode of BTVS. You’d be wrong. See, I just noted that I know what he did when I said you’d be saying I had no clue. See, my mind does work in it’s own wonders at times.

This musical is called ”Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” and is about a mad genius, Dr Horrible, that wants to join the Evil League of Evil as well as get to know the girl he sees at the local Laundromat during the week. His nemesis is Captain Hammer, the do-gooder of all do-goodiness. This three-part epic will be available online for FREE up to midnight, July 20th. You can get it on iTunes for a very good season pass of $3.99 and watch it from now to eternity on your Apple TV, iTunes, or iPod/iPhone. A DVD will be out sometime this fall, look for the announcement from Comic-con sometime in the next week.

So who stars in this tour-deforce of a musical? I’ll tell ya so listen closely. Dr Horrible is played by Neil Patrick Harris (Doggie Houser), Captain Hammer is played by Nathan Fillion (Mal on Firefly), and the lady that Dr H is interested in, Penny, is played by Felicia Day (Vi on BTVS in 2003).

Click on over to www.DrHorrible.com and enjoy the musical fun that is “Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.”

<br
