Do you find Will Ferrell highly entertaining? Do you like his shtick? Well here is your chance to possibly wet your pants a little bit in a dark theater next to a stranger!

You are invited, by Atomic Popcorn, to join us for Sony’s upcoming comedy, THE OTHER GUYS, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.

For all of you that need a laugh out there, here is the synopsis of the film:

NYPD Detectives Christopher Danson and P.K. Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson) are the baddest and most beloved cops in New York City. They don’t get tattoos – other men get tattoos of them. Two desks over and one back, sit Detectives Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg). You’ve seen them in the background of photos of Danson and Highsmith, out of focus and eyes closed. They’re not heroes – they’re “the Other Guys.”

But every cop has his or her day and soon Gamble and Hoitz stumble into a seemingly innocuous case no other detective wants to touch that could turn into New York City’s biggest crime. It’s the opportunity of their lives, but do these guys have the right stuff?

Now to wet your pants, Ferrell style:

big presentation of the day was from Warner Bros. First, the first footage from Green Lantern was screened. Although nothing spectacular, the fans enjoyed it overall, but were disappointed with the lack of Reynolds in the suit. This only confirms the fact that the suit is a work-in-progress. Still, I am looking forward to this film and hope that it can be a simple, fun superhero origin story, which we haven’t seen a lot of recently. Also, I’m looking forward to the more fantastical elements of the hero. Producer Donald DeLine said that many other Green Lanterns are featured and that the movie is part space opera, which is a good sign that they’re not ignoring that area of the Green Lantern mythos. And although the Green Lantern announcements are cool, DC has really not stepped up their game to challenge Marvel’s cinematic dominance. Geoff Johns is now in charge of their creative decisions moving forward, which is a great move, but the company has not centralized their film properties as Marvel has to such enormous success. Also, there was no word on Batman, which was a huge missed opportunity. Still, I’m hoping that after Green Lantern DC gets their act together and makes something great, maybe a Justice League movie? (Although I’m torn on whether or not Chris Nolan’s Batman should be a part of anything like that.) After a short Harry Potter trailer and panel, Zack Snyder came onstage for Sucker Punch. This new movie is based on his idea and stars an ensemble cast of women who are breaking out of a mental institution and includes Carla Gugino, Jamie Chung, Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone and Emily Browning. I’m not sure what to think about this movie, but the footage got a fantastic reception and it sounds truly unique. Hopefully the trailer gets released online soon so we all can see it.

Let Me In, the American remake of the Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In, has had an enormous 360 when it comes to the public’s view. After a period of resenting the fact that such a movie was being remade, it seems like every detractor has been shut up by footage from the upcoming movie. I know I wasn’t too excited for this, but now its definitely on my radar. Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), from what I can tell, is doing a fantastic job helming the movie. He talked about how Steven Spielberg gave him tips for interacting with young actors, and that is what has me most excited for this film. Both Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road) and Chloe Grace Moretz ((500) Days of Summer, Kick-Ass) have a lot of potential to give amazing performances and I hope they both pull it off. Check out this trailer for the film:

<object

It’s still unclear what actually happened, but the prevailing rumor is that someone asked another guy to move and when he didn’t, he stabbed him in the face with a pen. That’s speculation, but the scene was pretty grisly with blood everywhere and the victim being taken out on a stretcher, all with 8 or 9 cops in the vicinity.

introduced their new film, Paul. In the movie, the duo travel to Comic-Con and then embark on a road trip to Roswell, New Mexico. On the way they meet an alien named Paul, who is voiced by Seth Rogen. Paul is directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad) and the supporting cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Bateman, and Jeffrey Tambor. I am really looking forward to this movie as Pegg and Frost are consistently hilarious and the story is pretty original. Paul is not your typical alien – he basically thinks of himself as an everyday Joe. Road trips are always pretty fun so having one with this trio of comedians and an alien should be awesome.

Once again Jon Favreau showed his skill at captivating the geek demographic by creating huge anticipation for Cowboys & Aliens, his new movie starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, and Sam Rockwell. Although the idea is great, it takes skill to blend such two very different genres, but Favreau is going for a very Western feel. After explaining that he is trying to emulate the Sergio Leone/John Ford films of the 40s and 50s, while using practical effects from the 80s as well as CGI for the aliens, he decided to just screen some early footage. Although the crew has only been shooting for three weeks, attendees were very impressed by the scene. In a surprise appearance, Harrison Ford was brought on stage in handcuffs by two security guards. It was his first appearance at the convention and the crowd went nuts. This a natural reaction, of course, to the man who played Han Solo and Indiana Jones, as well as many other awesome characters. I hope Favreau can really nail the Western feel and deliver a really fun, interesting film due out next summer, July 29th.

Now the presentation you’ve all been waiting for: Marvel. What Marvel is doing with their properties on film is incredible. By going independent and forming Marvel Studios where writers can collaborate and come up with great, interlocking stories for all of their superheroes, the company shows that it knows what its doing. Hopefully the result will be incredible, but there are a lot of moving parts, and all of them must come together perfectly. Captain America was first, as a short teaser showed Chris Evans in full costume throwing the iconic shield at the camera. After some discussion, the filmmakers actually had some footage to show which involved Hugo Weaving as Red Skull searching for an artifact that has something to do with Odin. I really like the Indiana Jones/World War II period piece vibe I’m getting for this movie. I hope Joe Johnston can create a very good atmosphere and seeing Cap killing Nazis is going to be sweet. Next up was Thor, which is much farther into production. A lot of footage was shown, and I can’t wait to see the trailer. Apparently the costumes are not nearly as cheesy as they looked in the first images we were shown. Reactions were very positive, which is a relief. Finally, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige brought on The Avengers. After years of rumors, this movie is finally actually happening. The final lineup was announced: Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, Scarlett Johansson as Natalie Rushman/Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Donald Blake/Thor, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk (see the full cast in the photo from the event). It’s going to be insane seeing so many heroes on screen at the same time. I hope Joss Whedon can bring together all of this madness and deliver an amazing film.

Hitflix reported that Marvel would not be calling Ed Norton to play Bruce Banner/The Hulk in The Avengers. After giving it a few days, this news is definitely confirmed. Unfortunately, Norton is definitely out.

Let’s start at the beginning. Friday, Hitflix broke the story that Marvel would not be asking Edward Norton to return as The Hulk. On the surface it sounded as if the much-publicized disagreements between Norton and Marvel over The Incredible Hulk had continued, and that creative differences had led to the split. However, this was definitely not the case. Norton was very interested in returning for The Avengers, had been approached by Marvel, and was in the process of civil negotiations. He had even met with Joss Whedon, and everything was going smoothly until seemingly out-of-the-blue Marvel decided to “go in another direction.”

The next day, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed the news with this statement:

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members. The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

Norton’s agent Brian Swardstrom, responded with:

“This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light. Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast. Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith. This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.”

<p

Passing over Norton, a great actor who obviously loves the character, was bad enough. But the way they did it was even worse. I mean, Marvel has the opportunity to make the biggest geek movie ever and they’re dropping the ball. They already know that this movie is guaranteed to make a killing at the box office, but that doesn’t give them an excuse to forget their fanbase.

This whole ordeal just goes to show that Marvel isn’t as concerned with making a seamless bridge from their individual superheroes to The Avengers as we were led to believe. I’m sure that the movie will still be amazing to watch, but that break in continuity will hurt a little.

Yesterday, Norton released a statement of his own on his official Facebook page:

“As most of you know, I don’t like to talk much about the business of making movies because it means a lot to me to protect the audience’s fullest enjoyment of the ‘magic’ that films can have. But I am so appreciative of the outpouring of support from the fans of the Hulk and the Avengers that I feel it would be rude not to respond. So here goes: It seems it won’t work out for me to continue playing Bruce Banner for Marvel in The Avengers. I sincerely hoped it could happen and be great for everyone, but it hasn’t turned out as we all hoped. I know this is disappointing to many people and that makes me sad. But I am very sincerely grateful to Marvel for extending the offer and even more so for giving me the chance to be a part of the Hulk’s long and excellent history. And I really can’t thank the fans enough for how much enthusiasm you’ve sent my way about what Louis and I tried to do in our turn with the legend. It means a lot to me. I grew up with Banner and Hulk and have been a fan of every incarnation. I’m really proud, and very blessed, to have been one of them and will be thrilled to see him live on through other actors. Hulk is bigger than all of us, that’s why we love him, right?

So, Norton bows out with class. Still, this whole story is very disappointing. I’m curious to see who will be chosen to replace him. CHUD posted a rumor that Joaquin Phoenix was approached for the role but that has not been confirmed. Presumably, we will have an announcement at Comic-Con next weekend.

Atomic Preview: Maryland Film Festival 2010

Baltimore Bits

Movie News

10th Maryland Film Festival

Alloy Orchestra

Baltimore

Baltimore film festivals

Charles St

comedy

drama

Earthling

entertainment

film festivals

Freedom Riders

John Waters

John Waters presents United 93

Maryland Film Festival 2010

Mother and Child

movies

Putty Hill

Rodrigo Garcia

samuel l jackson

Stanley Nelson

Sundance festival

The Charles Theater

Tiny Furniture

United 93

This weekend, you are in luck.

Starting tonight, a parade of filmmakers, artists and cinephiles will flood into the Station North Arts District of Baltimore to begin celebrating the 10th annual Maryland Film Festival. The city’s most exciting movie event has organized three days and four nights of films, speakers and panels chock full of recognizable faces, fresh talent and engaging and inventive cinema. The likes of John Waters, and Rodrigo Garcia (Nine Lives) will be among those haunting the Charles Theatre this weekend and presenting the films.

Things kick off this evening with Opening Night Shorts!, featuring an eclectic and colorful collection of short subject films by artists both local and national. Playing at 7 p.m. at MICA’s Brown Center, the annual shorts program opens the festival with a flurry of invention, including the animated, manga-inspired, Junko’s Shamisen, that brings Japanese folklore to vivid, imaginative life.

Besides short films, which will be playing in various configurations all weekend, MFF offers a veritable feast for the hungry filmgoer; blending indie edginess with art-house experimentation, hollywood drama with foreign thriller, and beloved talents with faces completely new to the scene.

John Waters will host another film he hand-picked (but is not associated with creatively) on Friday night with Paul Greengrass’ United 93 . Local talent Matthew Porterfield offers another look at Baltimore with Putty Hill. The silent epic Chang: A Drama in the Wilderness, from the creators of the original King Kong, will screen on Sunday with accompaniment from the Alloy Orchestra.

Another throwback treat is the yearly 3-D film, which is a far cry from the current technology, opting instead for those trade-mark red and blue paper specs you could find wrapped around the heads of kids in the 50s. This year’s movie is a western from schlockmaster William Castle, Jesse James Vs. The Daltons. Regardless your taste or fancy, the MFF has arranged an impressive buffet of films, new, old, independent, and mainstream.

The following are seven festival picks from AP that look to be worth your time. I’ll have full reviews for many of these films coming all weekend, so stay tuned.

Get your festival tickets in advance right HERE or get ticket info on the MFF’s official site, including film schedules and descriptions.

Daddy Longlegs

Indie dramas about parenthood and responsibility can sometimes be as dire and tedious as their big budget counterparts, but one look at the trailer to the Safdie Brothers ode to dads and kids, and you know you are in for something a little more honest. This one appears fresh and funny, and Ronald Bronstein looks to be doing a wonderful job as a man in-over-his- head with parenting.

<object

Drawing from elements ripped right from the pulps, including intergalactic parasites, human mutation and hurtling space matter, Liford’s languid drama feels like an odd hybrid between David Cronenberg and John Cassavettes. Beautifully photographed and well acted, Earthling is definitely worth a watch, especially for sci-fi fans. Look for Liford’s short films, My Mom Smokes Weed and Receive Bacon, also playing at the fest in the short film circuit.

<object

Burroughs: A Man Within

William S. Burroughs was, as his friends and admirers point out, a hard man to like. He’s an even harder man to pretty up for a feature length film, but Yoni Leyser doesn’t bother with that fool’s mission and instead gives us the man as he was, with plenty of facets many of us haven’t seen before. Probing, insightful and often affectionate without fawning, A Man Within is a decidedly strong biopic about one of the more confounding men of the 20th century. With this and Freedom Riders in play, it’s a strong year for docs at the fest.

Tiny Furniture

Now this looks like family. That’s probably because it really is. Lena Dunham, the star of this SXSW winner, casts her real-life mother and sister to play her cinematic ones and it pays off with an hilarious authenticity that makes you smile and wince, sometimes all at once. I’ve yet to see Tiny Furniture, but have it on the schedule. If the trailer is any indication, it’s going to be one of those comedy pics that build a loyal following by word of mouth. Time will tell.

Night Catches Us

Tanya Hamilton’s drama about two ex-Black Panthers dealing with their shared history in 1970’s Brooklyn made some waves at Sundance, landing on many critics best of fest lists. Fresh out of The Hurt Locker (best picture winner and MFF program entry!), Anthony Mackie steps into the lead here as a man who is painfully facing the past he ran from. This is Hamilton’s first feature and I’m looking forward to seeing what she’s brought to the table this time out.

Mother and Child

Last year it was Kathryn Bigelow’s Hurt Locker, and this year the closing film of the fest is another anticipated drama from a wonderfully talented headliner. Rodrigo Garcia, director of Nine Lives and the recent supernatural thriller Passengers, brings us a talent-packed look at the bond between mothers and their children, fittingly delivered on Mother’s Day, no less. With the likes of Annette Benning, Naomi Watts, Samuel L. Jackson, and Cherry Jones, Mother and Child promises pathos and a lack of dry eyes.

Freedom Riders

Stanley Nelson was already aces in my book thanks to his exemplary documentary Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple. Freedom Riders is every bit as good as Jonestown, maybe more so, given how well it navigates the minefield of historical racism. 49 years after a group of brave and idealistic men and women, white and black, embarked upon a civil rights protest in the deep south, Nelson points his camera back at them and the legacy they left. Notable not just for the poignant way it illustrates and breathes life into the harsh realities of that time, but also for the honesty with which it portrays the motivations and attitude of the government towards the freedom rides. A must see.

<object

This time we are bring you a list of some of the best on-screen duo’s there are! Below is a list of my top 10 on-screen duo’s of coarse you will have your own opinion. I promise to not use the word chemistry more than 4 times also!

If you all have any ideas for a top 10 list or want to see something specific send us an email at top10@atomicpopcorn.net and we will try and get it up here for you.

Without further ado, here is what I think are the top 10 on-screen duo’s of recent memory.

10. Ben Affleck & Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting- This unlikely duo of two kids from Boston making a movie based on something they wrote. Well the movie was a hit and the duo are still just that in Hollywood. Damon and Affleck both have a great career both behind and in front of them.

9. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys- who can see these guys without at least humming “Bad Boy Bad Boys, whatcha gonna do?” I know I can’t. A great on screen chemistry between these overly large men. The acting is on par with any action flick but these two bring to the table something special. I think they may be channeling a little something from another of our top 10 contenders for Top 10 Duo’s.

8. John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction – These extremely violent yet stupid criminals made a movie and a career for a certain Director. While these two came onto the scene quietly, they left with a very large bang after this film. Such chemistry and great writing lead these guy’s onto our Top 10 list.

7. Sam and Frodo in LOTR Trilogy – This unlikely duo has melted ring’s around the world. All jokes aside about being gay lovers, this on-screen duo shares a lifetime of pain and love throughout these films. This duo was something that I don’t we had seen on screen in a while. A true chemistry between two guys in the midst of uncertain times.

<img

What more can you want from two Joe Cool’s. Great acting, great suave, these two ooze cool.

5. Tyler and The Narrator in Fight Club – Didn’t we just mention Joe Cool above this, well he is back along side Edward Norton as number 5 on our list. These two really gave us a run for our money in Fight Club. Writing aside, the acting between these two made the movie what it is today.

<img

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in the Lethal Weapon franchise – oh my, two entirely different people trapped with one another made these two real men of the 80′s. The boys of Lethal Weapon brought to the screen an on-screen chemistry that not many have or will match. The laughs, the tears, the fights, true brothers ended up on screen with these two crazies!

<img

Yes I am also aware I have a animated feature as my number 3. Without a doubt you have to include Tom Hanks and Tim Allen on this list. Starting as fierce rivals for Andy’s love, they have grown into a duo among the best. The interaction and delivery from this duo brings to life what we only know as animated history!

<img

Robert Redford and Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting – Suave and complete. The acting and everything that follows and it includes these guys had it and brought it to the screen. These movies are classics for two reason and the two reason are the men above and below this blurb. These guys we looked at the men of men and rightfully so.

1. Steve Martin and John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles – the funny men of the 80′s paired together to bring to the screen one of the best on screen duo’s ever. With Candy gone we can only assume what could of been but this was and is still a great movie. Due in large, or in whole, to these two completely crazy comedians.<br

However, an <a

However, if you wish to remain completely clean, you may want to stop reading.)

The character was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby and based on Norse Mythology.

The general plotline is this: The Mighty Thor, a powerful warrior in the realm of Asgard, is cast down to Earth by his father, Odin, in order to teach him humility. While forced to live among humans, he learns what true hero really is and must use all his strength to thwart an invasion by the darkest forces of Asgard.

The film will switch between Asgard, the home of the Asgardians, and present-day earth.

Chris Hemsworth will play the titular role, with Sir Anthony Hopkins portraying his father. Tom Hiddleston is Thor’s stepbrother and arch-nemesis, Loki. Natalie Portman and Jaimie Alexander are Thor’s two love interests, from Earth and Asgard, respectively. Joshua Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, and Ray Stevenson are the warriors known as The Warriors Three, and the rest of the supporting cast includes Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Rene Russo, Kat Dennings, as well as Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

The movie is being directed by Kenneth Branagh, who is best known for his several Shakespeare adaptations.

Thor is set to be released May 6th, 2011.

So, what changed my mind about the movie? In the interview, Branagh had this to say about his film:

“Inspired by the comic book world both pictorially and compositionally at once, we’ve tried to find a way to make a virtue and a celebration of the distinction between the worlds that exist in the film but absolutely make them live in the same world. It’s about finding the framing style, the color palette, finding the texture and the amount of camera movement that helps celebrate and express the differences and the distinctions in those worlds. If it succeeds, it will mark this film as different…. The combination of the primitive and the sophisticated, the ancient and the modern, I think that potentially is the exciting fusion, the exciting tension in the film.”

This shows how much passion the director, who is a huge Thor fan, is putting into the project. He is taking the comic book and, rather than hype it up for mass appeal, bringing the inherently Shakespearean aspects of the story to the forefront. Combine this with a stellar cast, and you should have an amazing film.

After seeing the comic-book movie genre explode, this is the kind of creativity that distinguishes a “Dark Knight” from a “Wolverine.” Exciting action is fun, but a fantastic story and good filmmaking are what really matters, and that is why I am really looking forward to this film.

Is A Heavy Rain Movie In The Works?

Movie News

chris weitz

Heavy Rain

Neil LaBute

new line cinema

Quantic Dream

samuel l jackson
<guid

Practically every decision in the game, from whether or not to murder someone to how hard you place your wife’s fine china on the table, is decided and performed by the player. In effect, this makes for a near-endlessly replayable game with countless different consequences and outcomes for each character and each decision.

And now, somehow, New Line Cinema wants it to be a movie.

Joystiq reported that New Line snatched the film rights to the game as far back as 2006, just after Quantic Dream had unveiled the new motion-capture technology that they developed to help bring their emotional characters to life. Now New Line may be putting those production rights into action to quickly capitalize on the success of the game and the buzz surrounding its new kind of interactive storyline.

But there’s the rub. A movie can’t be interactive. A singular movie version would seem to disregard nearly everything special about the concept and execution of Heavy Rain. Unless New Line plans to create a Clue-like film involving multiple, interchangeable plot developments, then we can expect to see only one of the literally hundreds of possible

plotlines and resolutions, and there’s every reason to believe it will be the classic, typical Hollywood version in which the killer is brought to justice and every character survives.

Quantic Dream themselves also seem to be pushing the game into Hollywood’s neighborhood by releasing a video directed by Neil LaBute showcasing actors and filmmakers such as Samuel L. Jackson, Stephen Frears, Peter Bogdanovich, and Chris Weitz discussing the game and its interactive nature. Check it out below.

<object
