class="alignright size-medium wp-image-10621" title="macdonald-scott" src="http://www.atomicpopcorn.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/macdonald-scott-300x196.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="196" />Ridley Scott called. He wants you to co-direct a movie he’s producing.

Let me explain. Yesterday, YouTube began promoting Life in a Day, a feature-length documentary that will be composed of user-submitted videos. On July 24th, users are encouraged to record their day, whatever that may entail, and submit their video to the Life in a Day project on YouTube. The most compelling and distinct clips will then be edited together by director Kevin Macdonald (State of Play, The Last King of Scotland). The result will premiere at next year’s Sundance Film Festival in January.

The goal of the project is to become a “snap-shot of life on Earth during one 24-hour period.” Quite ambitious, but very intriguing. If done right, this could be a very powerful picture of the unity of all people, no matter what race, religion, or language.

So what do you get for participating? If your clip is selected you will be credited as a co-director on the film. Then, 20 of those co-directors will be flown to Park City for the premiere next January.

On the surface this sounds like a really neat idea. I don’t know how compelling the final product will actually be, however. It will take a lot of work to find a single thread – an idea that permeates the entire project, but there is definitely potential for a very interesting doc.

Crowd-sourced projects like this do not have a good reputation (despite successes such as Wikipedia and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s hitRECord), but its great that more high-profile talent are beginning to realize the potential that this kind of thing has.

<object

Especially nowadays, there is no excuse not to make a film if you have the desire to. YouTube and “real” films are starting to intersect, and I think that could be a huge deal. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Go to <a

As you’ve probably guessed this video has something to do with soccer, specifically the 2010 FIFA World Cup currently being played in South Africa, and Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. I bet you never thought you’d read a sentence with those two in it! Have you been watching the 2010 World Cup? Who are you cheering for? Speaking of The Lord of the Rings who would you like to direct the upcoming The Hobbit? What do you think of the rumor that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp will be offered the job? Personally I’m a little bummed that Guillermo del Toro won’t be directing! Back to the business at hand- World Cup, Middle Earth style!

<object

This trailer is based on the Serbian comic book Technotise created by Aleksa Gajić and Darko Grkinić. A sequel to the comic has already been successfully adapted into a full-length animated film entitled Technotise: Edit & I. Jaron Pitts is the man behind the trailer, his YouTube page says he made it “for some producers in Hollywood who are making this into a live-action” film. I have to agree with whoever decided to put Milla Jovovich in the starring role, she’s perfect for the film and genre. So I’m wondering what you think, any Technotise comic book fans out there? Anyone see the animated film? Do you want to see a live-action adaptation? Who would you have play the lead? Here’s the trailer for the animated film for those who have not seen it:

<br
