George Romero’s got two categories, two modes of operating: the guy makes masterpieces and extremely flawed films with great ideas. The Crazies (one of the director’s lesser known works that was mashed together with Day of the Dead by Danny Boyle to create 28 Days Later) belongs in the latter category alongside Knightriders and Martin.
The central concept at work, however — biological infection leading people to madness — is one large enough to warrant a reworking by director Breck Eisner (Sahara) and screenwriter Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror remake). Scheduled for release in February, 2010 — and barely publicized thus far — the new Crazies will star Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell.
Hopefully we’ll see a trailer soon that shows a little more imagination than this poster, which is neither crazy nor indicative of how close Eisner/Kosar are sticking to Romero’s original work.
