The Mentalist – Season 2: “Red Bulls”

Bosco and his team raid a house where a kidnapper is allegedly holding a hostage, but when they break in, the CBI team is who they find. On the floor is a mummified corpse wrapped in plastic. As the shock wears off, a surprised Jane asks the team to “lower the guns, please.”

The-Mentalist-001Back at the CBI headquarters, each group explains to the other why they showed up at the house. Bosco’s team was led to the house by the trail of a missing heiress. Lisbon and her team showed up after getting a call from the coroner that a body was in the house. It just so happens that this body was of a kidnapped man from a wealthy family. Putting two and two together, Jane concludes that perhaps the teams are looking for the same kidnappers. What Jane wasn’t counting on, however, was the Chief Manelli telling the teams to work together to find the culprits. Bosco and Lisbon’s team will have to act as one if they want to get the girl back alive and solve the case.

Lisbon, Bosco and Jane head to the family of the missing heiress. While they are there, a ransom demand comes in from the kidnappers: $3.75 million or they will kill the girl.

When they get back to the station, Lisbon speaks with the SFPD officer who was on the case of the murdered man. He tells Lisbon that even if they pay the ransom, the family should prepare for their daughter to be murdered.

Bosco and Jane go to speak to members of the Mexican mafia. Bosco asks Jane to back him up, an odd choice. As it turns out, one of the members is actually an informant for the CBI. Bosco’s attempt to scare Jane with a “macho cop” routine doesn’t hold up and Jane calls it right away. The act is worthless, too, when the informant tells them they have nothing to do with the kidnapping.

While Van Pelt and Rigsby are canvassing an apartment building for members of a gang called the Crazy Hill Gang, Van Pelt is shot  in her bulletproof vest by a female tenant. Rigsby and a member of Bosco’s team pursue her into an industrial building where she attempts to ambush them. Rigsby gets the drop on her, however, and shoots her before she can kill them.

After searching the shooter’s apartment, they find that she was actually the girlfriend of the man who was previously kidnapped and murdered. They suspect she was a member of the Crazy Hill Gang.

Bosco finally decides to try things Jane’s way. They decide to trick the family into leaving the money unguarded for a short period of time. Meanwhile, Jane places a camera in the room to watch the money while the kidnapper is coaxed out. In a short time, the nanny walks in and removes the tracer that Bosco put inside the case with the money and they trace the last call she made from her cell phone, informing the kidnappers that the money is on its way.

Before they can take the money and kill the girl, however, the team converges on the house and manages to rescue the girl and arrest the rest of the kidnappers.

Before the end of the episode, Bosco seems to have finally noticed that even though Jane is not a cop, he does possess certain skills that are unique and helpful. To show his appreciation, he gives Jane the case file on Red John to look over. Although Jane wants the unabridged version, it is easy to see that he really appreciates the sentiment.

Will we finally see more of the Red John case soon? Time will tell.
