The Mentalist – Season 2: “Red Scare”

During this episode, Patrick Jane and crew are on the case when an architect falls to his death from the window of a mansion.

Upon arriving at the scene and seeing the body, Jane notices a small brass button with the letter ‘B’ in the dead man’s hand. The deputy on the scene gets a chill when he sees the button, which tips off Jane right away. He claims that the original builder and owner of the home had the last name Beckworth, and that some say the house is still haunted by his spirit.

mentalistRigsby comes upstairs while they are talking to report that the home’s alarm was only set off when the victim was thrown or jumped from the window.

“Hmm, spooky.”

The crew interviews the deceased’s wife, who claims to have been home alone in San Francisco while he was working in the mansion. She brings forth a suspect, a woman who had previously threatened her husband over the ownership of the mansion.

Jane comes in to speak with the widow, asking her if her husband had ever mentioned strange happenings in the house, which he had.

Cho speaks with the woman suspect, Miss Adler, and her nephew Drew who claims she was home alone as well.

Meanwhile, JaneĀ  goes to a local historian to learn about the mansion and its builder. The local historian tells him there are stories about hauntings. There is also a rumor about a buried Beckworth treasure somewhere in the mansion.

Back at the mansion Rigsby and Van Pelt see the front door is open and go inside to investigate. In the same room where the victim supposedly was attacked by a spirit, they experience the same phenomenon. When the door opens, however, it is jane disguised as a ghostly figure, not an actual spirit.

After showing them an elaborate mechanism that creates a reflection of its user, Rigsby asks him to explain how someone got into the house without setting off the alarm. Of course Jane has an answer for this as well, opening a wall panel that leads into a secret passage below the mansion.

While Van Pelt and Rigsby search for where the tunnel leads, van pelt screams when something brushes past her leg. Rigsby comes to her rescue and pulls her closer to him. Awkward tension rises as suddenly Rigsby admits his love to Van Pelt. Just as he is about to kiss her, however, Jane opens up the entrance and destroys the moment with a gleaming smile.

Outside on the lawn, the widow and Miss Adler get into a fight. Cho breaks them up and takes the widow back to the CBI where she admits that she was actually in the mansion the night of her husband’s murder, spying on him because she thought he was being unfaithful.

Jane speaks with Miss Adler in another room and questions her as to why she wants the mansion so badly. After some mentalist prowess, he ascertains that she is secretly seeking the famous Beckworth treasure, supposedly hidden in the mansion. She tells him that the secret lies in a riddle, which the historian supplies to Jane.

They take it to the mansion, where he begins to decode the riddle. In the message the word “here” is misspelled as “hear,” which leads him to the piano in the mansion. Underneath it he finds a box containing another clue. Before Jane can decipher its meaning, however, Lisbon makes a scene by shutting it down in order to coax out the real killer.

Drew, Miss Adler’s nephew sneaks into the mansion later that night attempting to find the treasure but Jane and Lisbson catch him in the act. He comes clean and explains how the victim uncovered his ghost act and Drew then murdered him to cover his tracks.

Jane did find an old key while he was searching the house and following the clue, however, and hangs onto it.

Before the closing credits, Rigsby and Van Pelt finally get the kiss that has been coming for a season and a half. Boy, it’s a good long one, too.

As for the treasure? Jane brings each of the CBI crew a glass of very, very old wine to enjoy with some nice, greasy pizza at the end of the episode.
