Between Legion and Priest (the two Paul Bettany/Scott Stewart creature features coming out in the next year), we already need to prepare ourselves for an onslaught of self-serious horror films with religious overtones. Now, with The Shrine, it seems that we have a trend on our hands.
Directed by Jon Knautz (Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer), the film revolves around a backpacker missing in Europe, and a group of journalists who
“… link his disappearance to a remote village in Poland called Alwainia. Upon further investigation, the journalists discover that Alwainia has a history of bizarre cult activity revolving around human sacrifice. Hell bent on discovering the truth, they travel to the small village, but quickly find themselves pursued by a mysterious group set on killing them. Forced into the gruesome reality of true survival horror, the journalist’s soon discover that Alwainia hides a much darker secret than they could ever imagine.”
This would all sound rather trite (and Wicker Man-ish) if not for the fact that the teaser trailer is actually very well executed. The concept seems like a darker take on The Village mixed with the torture porn films of the past several years. Time will tell whether or not Knautz has the chops to develop a truly worthy project.
Oh, and if the lead actor in this trailer looks familiar, he’s Aaron Ashmore of Smallville semi-fame, younger brother of Iceman from the X-Men films. Check out the trailer below:
