Three Rivers 1.06: “Where We Lie”

A young gymnast who has collapsed at an event and a young boy trapped underneath the wreckage of a carnival ride both garner the attention of the staff at Three Rivers.

425.threerivers.oloughlin.woodward.meonning.lc.073109Lisa, presumably a nurse at Three Rivers, is one of the first on the scene at the carnival where the young boy is trapped.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Miranda questions Dr. Jordan about her relationship between herself and Miranda’s father. He was also a doctor at the hospital, who passed away. Jordan says they were only very close colleagues, but Miranda doesn’t seem to believe her.

The gymnast, Megan, comes to in the hospital but initially the staff doesn’t know what is wrong with her. After some tests and questions, she admits to taking too many pain relievers to treat a recent injury. Unfortunately, her liver is beginning to shut down because of the damage from the medication.

At this point, Kuol, a reoccurring character in the series, is still in dire need of a heart transplant. Andy tells him the medication he has been on is no longer working, and he needs a VAD (Vascular Assisting Device). The problem he faces is the inability to afford the procedure. In turn, Andy and David make it their goal to find some way to get Kuol the procedure he needs.

At the carnival accident, rescuers are finally able to get the child, Dillon, out from underneath the wreckage. When he arrives at the hospital with Lisa, he is pretty banged up from the accident and in critical condition.

As Megan’s situation worsens, we find that one of her parents may be able to become a live donor for by giving a small part of their liver to her. Because livers uniquely regenerate themselves, she may not need a whole liver.

Unfortunately, neither of the parents is a match for Megan, which in turn means that the father is in fact not her biological father. Later, the mother comes to Dr. Jordan and admits that she cheated on her husband with another man. They both attempt to find the biological father to save Megan.

Meanwhile, David spends time with Kuol who tells him about how he came from Sudan to America, that he has been a lucky man but is now afraid his luck has run out because he cannot afford the medical procedure he needs. David decides to look into the company that supplies the VADs to the hospital to see if they are looking for any clinical trials. He finds the representative in the database and get’s a twinkle in his eye when he sees she is a very attractive woman.

Andy’s work with Dillon begins to become more difficult when Dillon starts to bleed internally while they are trying to give him a CT scan. Andy rushes him to the OR for immediate surgery. As a result, Dillon has to have one of his lungs removed because of the accident; his heart is still trying to pump blood to it. Finally, Andy manages to get him to a stable condition.

Later, Andy sees Lisa washing Dillon’s blood-stained shoes and asks her if she is okay. She seems to be taking Dillon’s accident very hard and becomes emotionally distraught over it.

As part of his plan to get Kuol a VAD, David takes the representative to dinner in order to seduce her into letting Kuol be entered into the clinical trail. He agrees to speak at conferences, and perhaps spend a little bit of  “alone time” with the rep, in exchange for the free VAD.

Back at Three Rivers, Dr. Foster and Ryan finally track down Megan’s biological father and speak with him about donating part of his liver to the girl. Unfortunately, because of the numerous risks and his own family to worry about, he tells Megan’s mother that he cannot take the risk of donating to Megan even though he is a match.

In Dillon’s room, the boy finally begins to breathe on his own again and it seems as if he will be all right. Rock Star Andy has done it again.

Meanwhile in one of the hospital waiting rooms, Megan’s father confronts her biological father and asks him to please reconsider donating to Megan. After a heartwarming conversation about family and loved ones, he agrees to undergo the risky procedure to save Megan’s life.

Afterward, Megan’s mother tells Dr. Jordan that she will tell her daughter the truth about the situation because it is the right thing to do. This inspires Dr. Jordan to come clean to Miranda about a relationship between herself and Miranda’s father. Miranda does not take the news well at all, however, and storms out of Dr. Jordan’s office.

In Kuol’s room, Andy explains  all about the VAD procedure he and David were able to get for him and he is once again back to his cheery and hopeful self.

At the end of the episode, Andy and Lisa meet on the roof of the hospital. Lisa explains to him the reason why she took Dillon’s accident so hard; it reminded of her sister, who died when she was 12. The embrace they share afterward hints at a possible romance in the future. Time will tell.
