Tonight’s episode features a young man named Nick, who says he fell from the attic while working at home, as well as the wife of a very rich entrepreneur named Tracy, who collapses after a speech in San Fransisco.
Tracy shows up in Three Rivers with liver failure after she collapses during a foundation reception. Jordan tells her she will need a transplant to survive.
Meanwhile, Kuol surprises Andy with news that an article in the newspaper helped him raise over $150,000 towards getting him back on the list. This is very good news because this is the help Andy needed to get Kuol back on the transplant list. Andy goes to the transplant committee to try and get Kuol back on the list telling him they have raised enough funds to list him. The committee votes in favor of listing Kuol.
In his room, Nick admits to Miranda that he didn’t slip, but instead must have passed out while coming out of his attic. He also tells her he has been suffering from headaches recently. Miranda orders more tests.
Jordan tells Tracy she has been matched by a donor in Youngstown, Ohio and prepares her for major surgery.
Andy gets a call from a man named Michael and seems very surprised to be hearing from him. Miranda brings him Nick’s lab results and he finds his liver and kidneys are beginning to shut down. She asks Nick and his wife, Beth, questions to help narrow the cause.
David goes to Youngstown to procure the liver for Tracy, but when they begin the procedure, David finds that the liver may not be viable for transplantation. Back at Three Rivers, Jordan delivers the news to Tracy that the liver she was supposed to receive had a tumor is not viable. She apologizes but there is nothing she can do except put her back on the transplant list.
Her husband, who is very rich, tries to offer Jordan any kind of money to get a new liver, but Jordan plainly tells him that money cannot and will not buy a new liver.
On his break, Andy goes to a local bar and meets Michael, who offers to buy him a drink. As a surgeon, he turns down the drink. Michael says he got parole six months ago and decided to contact Andy. Apparently, Michael is from Andy’s past.
Tracy’s husband checks her out of Thee Rivers against hospital advice because she didn’t get the liver and will find another way to get the organ Tracy needs.
Meanwhile, Andy and Miranda try to figure out what is wrong with Nick. They think it might be a disease that has been lying in wait. They decide to keep him for a while to run tests. Two weeks later, they find that his health seems to be picking up. Later, Nick gets a call from a neighbor who says Beth was found unconscious in their home. When she arrives, she has all the same symptoms that Nick had when he came in. Miranda moves her to isolation because they don’t yet know what the two are suffering from.
Tracy comes back in an ambulance with her Husband at her side. Her liver is not the only problem, however, as she is suffering from a massively infected incision to her abdomen. Jordan tells him that Tracy is septic and he admits that he took her to a transplant facility in Switzerland where they seemed to have done a poor job of transplanting a new liver.
Miranda and David find that there is a parasite in the liver Tracy received. They assume John bought her liver on the black market.
In Kuol’s room, Ryan brings Kuol a list of the donors who raised money for his transplant. They find that one donor made a very sizable donation of $131,000. Andy seems to perk up when he hears the number.
Back in Tracy’s room, Jordan tells her the new liver came from China, something her husband didn’t tell her. As she is a philanthropist she knows that prisoners in China are killed for their organs, and what John did goes against everything she stands for. Tracy begins to come critical when her body starts rejecting the liver and starts to shut down. Jordan takes her to surgery immediately to try to save her life.
When Beth wakes up, Nick is at her side and tells her that they are in isolation because the doctors don’t yet know what is wrong with them. Andy and Miranda begin to think an environmental issue may be causing their sickness. Because he works from home but better when he came to the hospital, they think it might be the house they recently moved into.
When Tracy comes out of surgery, Jordan tells John that she is stable, but still not in great condition. It will take time for her body to get used to the new liver, but she should be okay.
Beth and Nick are together when Andy and Miranda inform them that after a little investigation, they found that a methamphetamine dealer had a lab in their attic, something their landlord failed to inform them about. The chemicals from the lab are what were causing their conditions and with some medication they should be fine.
Later, Andy goes back to the bar to see Michael, confronting him on the $131,000 that was donated to Kuol. We find that Michael once loaned Andy the exact same amount for medical school. We find that Michael is Andy’s uncle and when Andy was younger, used to run with a very bad crowd. Before the episode ends, Michael tells Andy even though he is now a superstar surgeon, he cannot escape his past – or his Uncle Mike.
