For those of you out there who enjoy quirky sci-fi plots and hokey special effects you’re in luck! Fox is developing an American version of the BBC’s Torchwood.
Some of you may be cringing at the thought of another US adaptation of a British show. While we got The Office, we have butchered some wonderful shows in the past including Coupling, Men Behaving Badly and Viva Laughlin. Don’t despair!
Not only will the US Torchwood have the same producing team as the UK version, the original series creator Russell Davies is writing the pilot. Some of the UK cast may even follow the show to our shores.
For those of you not in the know, the series is a more serious and adult spinoff of the long running Doctor Who. Torchwood (an anagram of Doctor Who) is from the same creator, Davis, who reinvented the Who franchise back in 2003. The character of Captain Jack appeared in several episodes of Torchwood’s parent show in 2005 before being give his own show the following year.
Torchwood follows a covert investigative team in charge of controlling alien activity. Two seasons have run domestically on BBC America along with a stand-alone miniseries, Children of Earth, which broke all ratings records for the network last year.
The U.S. version of Torchwood will contain a global story line compared to the more localized focus of the first two BBC seasons.
