Some of you might have heard of this movie by now, but for most of us it seems like just another strange title to a flick we’ve never heard of. For those of you who dig the cheesy cult classics, the ever familiar Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze Point Break may ring a bell. The connection between the cult cop/surfing drama and this upcoming war drama is the director, Kathryn Bigelow. Her latest directing feat is that of The Hurt Locker, a modern day war drama starring Jeremy Renner, Guy Pearce, Evangeline Lilly among many others.
Based on recently declassified information and the personal wartime experiences of journalist Mark Boal (who adapted his experiences with a bomb squad into a fact-based, yet fictional story), director Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker presents the ongoing conflict in the Middle East from the perspective of those who see the fighting firsthand — the soldiers. As an elite Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team tactfully navigates the streets of present-day Iraq, they face the constant threat of death from incoming bombs and sharp-shooting snipers.
Already being nominated and winning awards from the past few festivals the film has been showcased at, including last year’s Venice Film Festival where it walked away with four awards including a nomination for the Golden Lion, nobody can seem to ignore this movie. Murmurs of greatness and already whispers of it’s greatness being so up there enough to be nominated for the coveted Oscar, this has already shot up in my personal list of ‘under the radar’ features that is coming out this year. Check out the trailer below and give your two cents on whether or not you’ll see it:
The Hurt Locker will be in limited release on June 26th at a theater near you.
