Universal to Produce Musical For Mattel Toy Line

Odd news, thy name is Universal. Taking a break from the action-megatastic, Universal has acquired the rights to a particular toy property from Mattel. What are they going to do with it? Turn it into a musical. <ahem>

Mattel, seeing its cross-town rival Hasbro turning every popular line of toys into a summer blockbuster (presumably) is chomping at the bit to get a piece of the action. This marks the first time the toymaker has made a deal with its property yet, strangely, it has yet to publicly disclose just what toy line is getting the Hollywood treatment. Mattel has only said that, “the property aspires to add a fresh twist to monster lore.”

“This is a new step for us — a real opportunity to launch a new intellectual property on multiple platforms,” said Tim Kilpin, general manager for Mattel Brands’ Girls, Boys & Games Group. “It has a broad family appeal and the ability to translate as a musical, (in) publishing and (to) other venues.”

Hairspray duo, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, are in talks to pen an original score for the musical.

Personally, I was excited about this until I learned that Madballs was not a Mattel property.
