2008 can be said to be a year plagued by tragedy, disappointment and shame. Just like at the movies, the small screen in general didn’t exactly shine this year. Very few movies could even be considered watchable and many shows…

Weekend Box Office Report 11/26/07
Written by Gillman on November 26, 2007 – 11:14 am

Here it is kiddies, Disney rules the Box Office again - shocker.

MOVIE (weeks in release/spot last week)/WEEKEND GROSS/TOTAL GROSS

1. Enchanted (1/-) $35,322,000.00 / $50,048,000.00
2. This Christmas (1/-) $18,600,000.00 / $27,100,000.00
3. Beowulf (2/1) $16,240,000.00 / $56,361,000.00
4. Hitman (1/-) $13,035,000.00 / $21,000,000.00
5. Bee Movie (2/2) $12,010,000.00 / $112, 069,000.00
6. Fred Claus (3/4) $10,735,000.00 / $53,070,000.00
7. August Rush (1/-) $9,430,000.00 / $13,330,000.00
8. Am. Gangster (4/3) $9,207,000.00 / $115,774,000.00
9. The Mist (1/-) $9,062,000.00 / $13,012,000.00
10. No Country… (3/7) $8,112,000.00 / $16,640,000.00

Fox must be disappointed with Hitman’s weak opening, but not nearly as much as MGM/UA with the opening for The Mist. Like I said in my review, the ending for The Mist is going to turn a LOT of people off and it is strong enough that word will spread quickly about it. That may be the case. That, or most people aren’t intrigued by a bunch of yokels hiding in the grocery store because it’s REALLY foggy out. Either way, no one can be happy about that, and maybe the poopy performance of Hitman might keep us from being subjected to more shitty video game adaptations.

The big hero of the week was “No Country For Old Men” which enjoyed a 168% increase from the previous week (mostly due to being in many more theaters). Beowulf had the biggest drop of the week, despite getting more screens. With a $150 mil budget it might not even break even. I never want any film to do poorly, it’s just bad for business all over Hollywood, but if it keeps them from making more Motion Capture CGI crap; Plummet Baby, plummet!

“Mr. Magorium’s Annoying Pile of Shit” plopped out of the Top Ten in just it’s second week. Sorry Dustin, time to play retarded again and get that career back on track. On a crazy note, “The Bourne Ultimatum” is hanging in there at number 25 still (holy shit) while “P2″ is below it at number 28 despite being out for just 3 weeks. Ouch.

Numbers from Box Office Mojo.

Man, “The Mist” was incredible! I LOVED it and it had my girlfriend and I in awe and talking about it for days now! I really hope it picks up at the box office because it truly deserves an audience.

Also, have to admit, I saw Beowulf in 3-D Imax and really enjoyed it. Not sure if it would have been the same in a reg theater and not 3-D though.

Looking forward to seeing Juno and No Country…

  2. Gillman says:

Yeah, I really hope The Mist finds an audience, but I expect it will have a big drop this weekend. Oh well, there is always the DVD.
