While Johnny Depp is reapplying his eyeliner this summer to shoot the fourth Pirates film, Costars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are not expected to return.
Depp signed on for the new film before there was even a script back in 2008. Knightley and Bloom, on the other hand, have expressed no desire to return to the franchise.
In an interview with Moviephone, Knightley said “It was a completely fantastic experience, and it was an amazingly large portion of my life, but I don’t think I need to go there again. I think that it’s done.”
Gore Verbinski, director of the original trilogy, is also choosing to move on. Rob Marshall (Chicago and Nine) will direct instead.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is loosely based on award-winning fantasy author Tim Powers’ 1987 pirate novel, “On Stranger Tides.” Ted Elliott, the co-writer of Pirates I-III, said the novel just happened to overlap the plot they had in mind for the fourth film.
“We wanted to do a story about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth,” Elliot told Empire Magazine, “ Tim Powers wrote a book about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth… it just turns out that to do that story you would need that book.”
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will begin shooting this summer on Hawaiian Islands Oahu and Kauai. The film is currently set to open May 20th, 2011.
Pity she did not mention that she was not invited back anyway. Seems like wishful thinking on her part.
