Wii to stream Netflix

Looking for a new way to get your movie fix during the cold winter months? The Nintendo Wii has just become the latest of three gaming consoles to get Netflix content.

Like Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 before it, the Wii will allow owners who have both a broadband internet connection and a Netflix account to watch content at no extra charge.

In order to access TV and movies with the Wii, owners will need an “instant-streaming” disc mailed to them from Netflix. Then, all they have to do is use the Wii remote to select the content they want to watch.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings’ goal is to offer movie streaming on as many devices as possible. In addition to the three gaming systems, Netflix streaming is already available on the Roku digital video player, some Blu-ray players, Internet-connected TVs and computers. The multi-platform streaming plan looks to the future, anticipating DVDs to become obsolete over the next couple of decades.

While Netflix is working to expand the number of devices subscribers can use to watch content, the company is also working to increase the number of titles available for streaming. Out of the more than 100,000 DVDs the company has available, only 17,000 movies and TV shows are available for instant play over the Internet.

In order to increase that number, Netflix is making more deals like the one it announced last week with Warner Bros. The company said it was going to delay sending out the latest movies from the studio by nearly a month in order to clear the rights for Internet streaming.

While the long-term goal is to stay ahead of media convergence, Netflix short-term plan with the Wii is to gain new users. With millions of homes already owning these devices, the new content offer hopes to prompt more people to try Netflix.

Fuck this, the Wii can't do it in HD. I was happy for a moment until I remembered that.
